Inscribed on the front free endpaper "Mildred L. Wood May 30 1925 From Mrs. Villard." Fanny Garrison Villard was a co-founder with her son of the NAACP and active in women's suffrage and peace movements. She was the daughter of prominent publisher and abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison and the wife of railroad tycoon Henry Villard. In near fine condition with a touch of rubbing. William Lloyd Garrison was an American abolitionist journalist suffragist and social reformer. He is best known as the editor of the abolitionist newspaper The Liberator which he founded with Isaac Knapp in 1831 and published in Massachusetts until slavery was abolished by Constitutional amendment after the American Civil War. One of the rarest of Pickering's Diamond Classics; most of the edition burned in a fire. Pickering's first book in the Diamond Classics series was his Horace of 1820. Editions of Virgil and Cicero appeared in the following year the Virgil being first and in 1822 he published Petrarch and Tasso. As a soldier - the anniversary of the memorable day you are about to celebrate annually gives fresh color to the undying laurels which victory has placed upon his name. As a statesman - his politicks principals and policy will continue to be regarded as sacred a legacy as was ever bequeathed to this nation . As a man - his character has lost nothing by comparison with that of any who have adorned this age. As a Christian - the closing scenes of his eventful life have testified that he was among the "pure in heart" to whom the promise was vouchsafe that they "should see God ." . Text block fine. Antoine Varillas 1624-1696 was a French historian best known for his history of heresy. He was born in Guéret and made a troubled way as a man of letters in Paris. He worked as a historian for Gaston Duke of Orléans. Then through an introduction from Pierre Dupuy he was able to have library access leading to work on manuscripts for Jean-Baptiste Colbert.
