Minor foxing and toning some dampstaining. The second page of "The Moment is Sad" is lacking otherwise complete. Good. A wonderful collection of early American sheet music mostly American imprints most printed on two pages. The printers of these early sheets include some of the most notable names of the period such as Hewitt Graupner Blake and Paff. Dichter & Shapiro in the Introduction to their EARLY AMERICAN SHEET MUSIC include these four publishers in a list of names they deem "eminently worth while." The highlights of the songs within the book are as follows: <br> <br> 1 Fortune Michael: "Jefferson & Liberty. A New Song. To the Air of Jefferson's March." Philadelphia. 1801. First edition. The most notable music sheet in this collection. Fortune an Irish immigrant wrote the song to commemorate Jefferson's election and sent Jefferson a copy of the song. The music was published by the first American antiquarian bookseller N.G. Dufief who at the time he published this was trying to sell Jefferson Benjamin Franklin's library for the Library of Congress. For whatever reasons jealousy self-interest Jefferson turned him down and Dufief auctioned it in 1803. Perhaps Dufief hoped to advance his sale by sponsoring this publication. Wogan "The Strangers Guide to Dublin" approx. 6" x 8" one side trimmed close with loss to two of the corner vignettes; also a folding 12" x 15" map of Berlin by Baldwin & Cradock trimmed close to the neat line all around; a curious advert for a moisturizing rejuvenating apparatus not illustrated clipped from a periodical for "Regenerators" of Leo Bohlius a hairdresser in Germany; with some additional newspaper clippings of the time and a few later also tipped-in or loose; with approximately 150 additional architectural scenery & art photos from the time averaging 3" x 3" size with a few larger images; the photos are of locales in Kilkenny Quenstown Ireland; various places in Wales & England; Altenburg Leipzig Dresden Hanover Germany; Brussels Belgium and other places; including a small photo of the Kristallnacht-destroyed synagogue of Leipzig; and another noted as the "Old Opera-House in Dresden as I saw it. Together two parts published in two volumes five years apart; rare survival. Doll's two volumes of church music are the earliest German language music books to use type to print the notes. The type font was called four-shape note system. It copied the type created and first used by Little and Smith in The Easy Instructor published in 1801 and was used by John Wyeth without acknowledgement. In addition to introducing this type to the Pennsylvania German tune-book tradition Wyeth was responsible for the development of Southern folk hymnody. E. C. Wolf records that the 1810 edition was reprinted in 1814 and again in 1821; in 1815 a second volume was issued with a similar title but different content." 1820651501820. Original calf-backed marbled boards 7 x 10 inches. "Universal Church" stamped in gilt on spines. Five Volumes with first page indexes approx. 225 pp. plus 8 additional loose leaves. Signatures loose page numbers erratic covers well worn. Text pages have been printed with staves musical notation and lyrics are added in ink. Manuscript music in various hands consisting mostly of hymns with some secular pieces from the origins of the Universal and Unitarian churches. Three of the books are titled for "treble" two with a printed label one hand-written and two of these have a similar song set although they include some different titles in different order so that the books do not appear to be a completely matched set for choristers. One book has the word "tenor" written in ink on the rear board with the ink ownership name of David West on the front pastedown and "Lyander W. Webb 15 August 1824" at the head of the index page. The fifth notebook is unmarked on the outside but has a manuscript note on the front pastedown: "Lyander W. Webb one of the members of the Universalist Church Choir." Some titles from these volumes: Surry Thanksgiving Miriams Song Canaan several versions Lancaster Dedication Exaltation- approximately twenty-five titles per book. The loose sheets have secular tunes primarily musical notation without lyrics with a few of the titles being: Hail Columbia "Nora's Song in the Poor Soldier" Washington's March Yankee Doodle The Plough Boy and Ramah Droog from the comic opera. Hail Columbia was originally written for and performed at Pres. George Washington's first inauguration in 1789.<br/>One book includes the hymn "Union" with words by "Rev. A. Kneeland" and by W. Dixon. Abner Kneeland 1774-1844 a pioneer evangelist and minister was a powerful if inconsistent advocate of Universalism for a quarter of a century beginning with the Winchester Convention of 1803. Kneeland Hosea Ballou and Edward Turner combined efforts to compile a new Universalist hymnal with Kneeland contributing about a third of the hymns "most of which have been judged to be inferior." After he left the Universalist fellowship in the 1830s he became the last man to be convicted of blasphemy in the state of Massachusetts. see his brief biography in the Unitarian Universalist Dictionary online <br/>Another tune called "Mount Vernon" comes from the psalms of David and was originally written by Isaac Watts 1674-1748 known as the founder of English hymnody. "This life's a dream an empty show; But the bright world to which I go Hath joys substantial and sincere; When shall I wake and find me there" Lyander W. Webb whose name appears in two of the notebooks may be Lyander Westram Webb 1805-1858 who was born in Philadelphia. Rev. Abner Kneeland was pastor of the Lombard Street church in Philadelphia from 1818 until his move to New York City in 1825. 1863List315Boston: Oliver Ditson and Company 1863. First Edition. Fine. Manuel Fenellosa and his brother-in-law Manuel Emilio came to the United States from Spain in 1836 aboard the SS United States. They settled in Salem Massachussetts first forming a band and then a music school. They were friends of the publisher John P. Jewett who published their work and let them perform at his home. Jewett was also the publisher of Uncle Tom's Cabin. Both Fenellosa and Emilio composed works inspired by the abolitionist cause. Emilio composed a companion piece for John Greenleaf Whittier's poem "Little Eva: Uncle Tom's Guardian Angel." Manuel's son Luis wrote A Brave Black Regiment the history of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Regiment. Fenellosa composed this piece in 1863 with lyrics written by an unknown "R.T.L." Annie was the wife of Samuel Milton Call 1847-1924 and later Reverend Henry Clay Sprinkle 1868-1955. Bound volume containing 28 music scores for piano. Illustrated title-pages done with ornamentation or printed in lithography 9 of which 4 are color. Volume is worn. Good. Unique collection of 28 American music scores for piano dating from 1848-71 including specimens printed in New York Boston Chicago Cincinnati St. Louis Milwaukee Cleveland Nashville and Louisville. This group features nine lithographs by such firms as Ehrgott. Forbriger & Co. Lithographers Cincinnati 4; Ehrgott & Krebs Lithographers ; Color lithography by Sarony & Co. New York; Lithographed title by E.H. Pigott Forbriger & Co. Cincinnati. This collection was bound together for Annie Van Eaton whose name is featured on the cover. Her music teacher Lorenz Kussner of Terre Haute Indiana clearly had experience with the pieces selected. PROVENANCE: Lorenz Kussner Pianos & Music Terre Haute Indiana. Kussner was a dealer in musical merchandise born in Hasse-Darmstadt Germany in 1836. In 1852 he immigrated to the Unites States settling in New York briefly before relocating to Cincinnati. While in Dayton Ohio he apprenticed to a piano manufacturer. After four years he moved again to Crawfordsville Indiana and the Greencastle IN teaching music. In 1864 he arrived in Terre Haute and opened his retail music store. After a year the building burned down. In August 1857 he married Emilie Weinhardt also a native of Germany. They had a daughter Amalia who became a well-known miniaturist artist. See: Hiram Williams Beckwith History of Vigo and Parke Counties Together with Historic Notes on the Wabash Valley . . . First edition reprinted in Harrisburg in 1822. John Wyeth was a Harrisburg printer who produced music and voice books for ministers and church groups during the first quarter of the 19th century. He was the first printer to use shape-note type in his books for the German religious community. In addition to printing for Rev. Isaac Gerhart he printed music books for James Doll and Johannes Rothbaust. Rev. Isaac Gerhart was a Reformed Minister of the Lykens Valley in Dauphin County Pennsylvania. "In addition to preaching administering the sacraments and conducting catechetical instructions Rev. Gerhart set about to improve church worship. He found a 'great defect' in the singing in those early churches. Since he had musical knowledge and talent he prepared a music book called Church Harmonia." 1893List316Chicago 1893. Broadside 11 ¾ x 5 ½ inches. Very Good. John Hutchison patriarch and leader of the Hutchinson Family Band was hired by the World's Fair Committee to perform as one of the "Wonders of America." This broadsheet unrecorded is a souvenir of his performance from the fair in which he sang "Prophecy of Freedom" a ballad with suffragist overtones that he had written in 1867. The Hutchinson Family singers had enjoyed a long and successful career at the point of the 1893 exhibition beginning as one of the most successful acts of the 1840s. <br /> Their support of abolition women's rights temperance and workers' rights had limited their following somewhat and following the Civil War their appearances in large cities were generally limited to churches temperance meetings and women's suffrage rallies. By 1893 John Hutchinson was at the tail end of his career - he would die fifteen years later - but was welcomed by attendants. William Lloyd Garrison would describe John Hutchinson's singing as "directly and purposely subservient to the freedom welfare happiness and moral elevation of the people." <br /> <br /> The broadsheet introduces the song as " sung at his meetings held during the 'Woman's Congress Campaign' through Kansas. dedicated to the 'World's Fair Congresses' and sung by him during that period when prominence was given to the 'Fatherhood of God and Brotherhood of Man' emphasizing the principle as a true method of restoring the unity of all good for the whole race of man." The Hutchinson Family Band embodied the ideals of the Second Great Awakening and this shows those ideals going strong at the dawn of the twentieth century. Eight of nine volumes bound up in four each volume comprised of twenty continuously paginated but separately printed parts. Small octavos. 19th century quarter calf and marbled boards. Five engraved plates in first volume. Extremities rubbed but sound widely differing paper stocks within each volume result in isolated foxing or tanning associated with a particular number within a volume general title present only in the first volume otherwise very good. A curious and bibliographically elusive serial made up of twenty numbers per volume occasionally ranging from as little as 8- 12pp. per issue possibly issued in wrappers if so not present here or self-wrappers. Only the first volume includes a formal title and date and no explicit dates appear in the remainder - a situation mirrored in the entry in the BN catalogue where the existence of a 9th volume is noted. Only the first volume includes the engraved plates signed "Lesestre." The content consists exclusively of the lyrics to then current songs in the theatres and other performances occasionally presented in their dramatic context with notations of the publishers of the scores and identification of the writers and singers.
