Laid in is Hays' membership card for "The Guild of Former Pipe Organ Pumpers" SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR. Will H. Hays managed Warren G. Hardings successful campaign for the Presidency of the U.S. and was subsequently appointed Postmaster General. After a year in that position he resigned to become most famously known as the first President of Motion Picture Producers and Distributors of America MPPDA which under his guidance published a blacklist of actors and workers studios should not hire inserted moral clauses into actors' contracts and published an informal list of suggested guidelines for film producers. When the Catholic Church formed its Legion of Decency and threatened nationwide boycotts of movies Hays installed a more formal production code called the Hays Code later simply "The Code" which became the virtual law of Hollywood until the 1960s. Ginsburg. Heskes notes that the composition "appears to be a song whose lyrics were quickly augmented to reflect a tragic event." Complete with six pages including the cover. Light soiling and wear with a couple of short closed marginal tears. Old tape repair to the spine. Very scarce; at time of listing OCLC reports no copies of this sheet music held by any institution. There are no examples in the trade and no auction records at the Rare Book Hub. Although often credited to Root & Cady or others the original lyrics of this famous Civil War ballad were actually written by a young soldier Lawson Wood while he waited to die in a Union hospital after being mortally wounded during the initial battle at Vicksburg. Root & Cady planned to publish the soldier's far more heartrending lyrics as written under the title "On the Field of Battle Mother" and later explained that a mistake was made "in regard to these words." See "George F. Root" by P. H. Carder and "The Compendium of Every Day Wants" by Luther Minter. This example published by Brainard in Cleveland simultaneously with Root & Cady's Chicago 1862 edition contains the dying soldier's original lyrics. "Henry Tolman January 15 1821 Boston MA-November 20 1888 Cohasset MA had operated his own firm dealing in musical instruments and umbrellas since 1846 and had began publishing in 1849. In the early 1850s he merged with George D. Russell to form Russell & Tolman. One of the most significant music publishers in the United States during the 19th century Russell & Tolman published a great deal of popular music as well as works of noted American composers such as George F. Root. They also sold pianos. After the dissolution of Russell & Tolman in 1862 Tolman took over the catalogue and continued until 1870 as Henry Tolman & Co. He sold his sheet music plates to Root & Cady in 1868. From 1862 to 1868 he was the sole publisher of the Boston Musical Times and in 1865 was elected vice-president of the Board of Music Trade. Russell was joined by his brother Joseph M. Russell in 1863 to form G.D. Russell & Co. a similar publishing and dealing business which also undertook printing work." 1971137953Beverly Hills CA: United Artists 1971. Vintage black-and-white studio still photographs from the 1971 "surrealist documentary" rock film. The still depicts composer/screenwriter Frank Zappa conducting and singing. <br/><br/>In 1970 Zappa completely re-formed the Mothers of Invention to include drummer Aynsley Dunber jazz keyboardist George Duke and three members of The Turtles. Zappa began to write a film for the new lineup and recorded "Chunga's Revenge" 1970 with them as a "preview." Subsequently Zappa met conductor Zubin Mehta and worked with him to produce a concert in May 1970 wherein the Los Angeles Philharmonic was augmented by the Mothers or vice versa as you like and referred to this as "the second preview." <br/><br/>The film itself shot in a week at Pinewood Studios outside London was a tripped-out documentary about life as a musician on the road and Zappa characteristically chose an eclectic group of celebrities to join the proceedings including Theodore Bikel Ringo Starr and Keith Moon. The resulting soundtrack is a matter of debate among Zappa enthusiasts but is notable for its orchestral finale "Strictly Genteel" a touchstone for the variety of classical music experimentations Zappa would subsequently pursue. <br/><br/>8 x 10 inches. San Francisco composer Carlos Troyer added a piano accompaniment he described as a "drum imitation." The cover reproduces an 1886 C.S. Fly photograph of Geronimo on the Warpath owned by Charles Lummis who supplied a short introductory essay titled "Geronimo The Apache Prophet." Also printed on the cover is the dedication "To Mrs. Rita Breeze of Los Angeles California." Breeze was a librettist who collaborated with Troyer on several projects.
