Billy Jim Layton was an innovative and influential American composer these three pieces set to the words of Dylan Thomas were produced during Layton's most active years of composing. The webpage for the Billy Jim Layton Collection housed at Stony Brook University states that "Layton was known for his unique musical style which he referred to as 'new liberalism.' He described this style as 'a new rich meaningful varied understandable and vital music which maintains contact with the great cultural tradition of humanism in the West.'" Notched and worn along the spine from once being bound within an album as a result the bifolia remain bound together a bit of separation at the top and bottom of the spine soiling to the wrappers still a very good and complete copy. For voice and piano. Plate number 1540. Above the music is printed a note explaining the background of the song; it's about the only daughter of Passaconaway the Chief of the Pennacook tribe who inhabited what is now called Concord New Hampshire. The daughter's husband who is the chief of another tribe gets into a dispute with Passaconaway while the daughter is there visiting. This results in Passaconaway refusing to allow his daughter to go back to her husband. The conclusion of the note reads "At the breaking up of the ice in the Merrimac river in the spring she attempted to make her escape to her husband by paddling her way alone in a canoe and perished in descending the falls of the river. A song written in dialect about African Americans acquiring their long deserved freedom with the second verse explaining how they would own the land and tools raise and sell the animals but that a child would never be sold. A heartbreaking plea for the freedom of African Americans published in the midst of the American Civil War; the words are taken from Whittier's poem "Song of the Negro Boatmen" first published in the February 1962 issue of The Atlantic Monthly. In fact we cannot find these lyrics published anywhere else; though there is a chance that they were printed in a 1912 issue of The New York Journal-American as the copyright is credited to William Randolph Hearst owner of the Journal to which Wilcox was a regular contributor.
