1856008048Fitchburg Massachusetts: Andrew Whitney 1856. First Edition. Sheet Music. Very Good. 6 pages including cover. Portrait illustration of Robinson on the front cover. Very light dampstain along the fore-edge margin.

Charles L. Robinson was an abolitionist leader who settled in Lawrence and worked for the New England Emigrant Aid Society which transported Free-Staters from the northeast to settle in the Kansas Territory and successfully swung the balance of power from pro-slavery advocates. He was instrumental in organizing voter fraud and intimidating pro-slavery voters which resulted in the Topeka Convention of 1856 electing Free-Staters into all important governing positions with himself as governor and creating a free-state constitution. The Topeka Convention was roundly criticized and eventually rejected by Congress and within three months President Franklin Pierce proclaimed the Topeka Government to be revolutionary and ordered the arrest of its leaders including Robinson.

This polka was composed by one of Robinson's long-time friends from Fitchburg Massachusetts and published in the short time between his 'election' as governor and subsequent arrest as a revolutionary.

At time of listing OCLC locates one copy of this title. 1862008045Philadelphia: Lee & Walker 1862. First Edition. Sheet Music. Very Good. 6 pages including the cover. Portrait illustration of Sprague on the front cover. Once bound so slightly trimmed with a rough left edge. Light wear and soiling. Small owner's stamp in upper right corner of the cover.

William Sprague was the Governor of Rhode Island when the Civil War began and although not a Republican he pledged President Lincoln military support from his state. Following the shelling of Ft. Sumter Rhode Island raised two regiments of infantry under the command of Colonel Ambrose Burnside. Sprague firmly believed that the war would be over in a matter of days once combat began so he accompanied the state's regiments to the Battle of Bull Run where he served as an aide to Burnside and had his horse shot out from under himself while doing so.

After the union defeat Sprague realized that the war would continue for some time so he returned to the Governor's Office. Sprague remained loyal to Lincoln and attended the Loyal War Governor's Conference at Altoona Pennsylvania in 1862 which despite some contentious issues reaffirmed support for Lincoln's management of the war and provided support for Lincoln to issue a preliminary emancipation proclamation decreeing that he would order the emancipation of all slaves in any state that did not cease its rebellion against the United States before 1 January 1863. Shortly after the conference Sprague resigned his position to run for the Senate in which he would serve for the next twelve years.

At the time of listing this version of the music is not listed in OCLC.

Lee & Walker books

195918149New York: Random House. Very Good in Very Good dj. c.1959 1960. First Edition. Hardcover. price-clipped solid copy with only light shelfwear but the verso of the dedication page contains extensive pencil notes regarding the character of Mama Rose apparently made by actress Fritzi Burr whose ownership signature appears on the ffep; attractive jacket with only light wear along top and bottom edges and at spine ends very slight fading at spine would grade a little higher but for the price-clipping. B&W photographs Vividly-rendered musical version of the noted ecdysiast's memories of growing up in show biz with the stage mother from Hell. Listening again to the cast album one is struck by how very many good songs the show contains; unfortunately the stagy and overlong 1962 film adaptation fails to capture much of the show's abundant pizzazz. Thankfully the much more faithful and entertaining 1993 TV adaptation with Bette Midler stepping effectively into the role originated by and forever identified with Ethel Merman is widely available on video. . Near fine.

Advertisement for the Minimoog Synthesizer a landmark instrument in 20th century pop music. Modular synthesizers had been used extensively in the studio but were cumbersome and expensive. With the release of the minimoog in 1970 synthesizers could be taken on tour and were more affordable to the general consumer rather than just the music industry professional. In fact the language of this advertisement is directed at non-professionals marketing the minimoog as "the one that stars do it with." A striking bit of ephemera advertising a major innovation that paved the way for an explosion in electronic music in the late 20th century. Moog Synthesizers unknown books
