1862008383Cleveland Also New York Detroit and Chicago: S. Brainard & Company Also S. T. Gordon D. S. Amsden and Root & Cady 1862. First Edition. Sheet Music. Very Good. Complete with six pages including the cover. Light soiling and wear with a couple of short closed marginal tears. Old tape repair to the spine. Very scarce; at time of listing OCLC reports no copies of this sheet music held by any institution. There are no examples in the trade and no auction records at the Rare Book Hub. Although often credited to Root & Cady or others the original lyrics of this famous Civil War ballad were actually written by a young soldier Lawson Wood while he waited to die in a Union hospital after being mortally wounded during the initial battle at Vicksburg. Root & Cady planned to publish the soldier's far more heartrending lyrics as written under the title "On the Field of Battle Mother" and later explained that a mistake was made "in regard to these words." See "George F. Root" by P. H. Carder and "The Compendium of Every Day Wants" by Luther Minter. This example published by Brainard in Cleveland simultaneously with Root & Cady's Chicago 1862 edition contains the dying soldier's original lyrics. Very scarce; as of 2018 OCLC reports no copies of this sheet music held by any institution. There are no examples in the trade and no auction records at the Rare Book Hub.

S. Hardcover. agency name rubber-stamped on both pastedowns otherwise a nice clean book with minimal shelfwear; jacket browned along spine and a little bit at the edges tiny tears at a couple of corners. Musical play "based on the story of the illiterate girl from Hannibal Missouri who married Leadville Johnny Brown a gangling Irish prospector and discoverer of one of the richest silver mines in Colorado" and her ambition to be accepted by Denver society which leads her to a successful effort to establish herself as a presence in Paris whereupon she heads back to rejoin her husband in Colorado. Unfortunately her return trip is on the Titanic the disastrous sinking of which she survives hence becoming known forevermore as "unsinkable." The original 1960 Broadway production starred Tammy Grimes who won a Tony Award and toured with the play for a couple of years but was supplanted for the 1964 film version by Debbie Reynolds; Harve Presnell as Molly's husband appeared in both the original play and the movie which was pretty much the high point of both his stage and film career although he had a pretty decent late-in-life run as a grizzled character actor. NOTE that in the typical fashion of published musical plays the text of this volume contains the song lyrics but not the music. . G.P. Putnam's Sons hardcover books
