He studied the violin as a young man and was considered a musical prodigy. A Colonel in the British army Count Bentinck had taken the boy under his care whereupon Ashe regularly attended the practices of the Count's regimental band. As a result he became familiar with various wind instruments and took a special interest in the flute. Having been introduced to the recently developed six key flute Ashe abandoned the violin and devoted himself to the flute. He made a much admired public debut in London on February 24 1792 performing a flute concerto of his own composition. In 1799 Ashe married a pupil of Vinanzio Rauzzini the soprano Mary Comer 1774-1843. Between 1801 and 1816 the soon to be famous Ashe sisters were born. Honoria born in 1802 was a pianist and another sister possibly Mary born in 1801 played the pedal harp. During this period Ashe was principal flautist at The King's Theatre London principal flautist of the London Philharmonic Society Professor of flute at the Royal Academy of music and musical director of the Bath concerts. Often longing for his roots Andrew Ashe with his family performed in Ireland several times before settling there in 1823. During the 1820's & 1830's they were one of the most prominent musical families in Dublin.
pre-1821.

1880List1817Newport 1880. Single page with writing on both sides signed by Howe. Fine condition. Fine. A short but interesting note from Julia Ward Howe to Albert Bagby the Illinois-born musician who trained with Liszt in Germany and would eventually be a longtime host of “Mr. Bagby’s Musical Mornings†at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York where it was a fixture among the high society set. Bagby’s career as a host started after presenting a paper to the Newport Town and Country Club while Howe was president. After he presented his paper on Liszt at the club he was approached by Howe’s daughter Maude Howe Elliot about turning the paper into a lecture. This would end up being the catalyst for him to abandon performing and devote himself to lectures and after giving his first presentation on Liszt to a small audience in his Manhattan studio he began his regular series at the Waldorf-Astoria.

The letter reads as follows:

My dear Mr. Bagby

The time for your paper is not quite settled. I will send you word about it very shortly and shall bear in mind what you say about your possible trip to Europe. We should be much disappointed to lose your lecture and I hope that we shall certainly hear you.

Yours sincerely
Julia W. Howe

July 31st
Newport R.I.

An interesting note documenting an event that would be essential for Bagby’s career. unknown

In his note apparently addressed to a music publisher the pioneering modern American composer Henry Cowell expresses his concerns that an error was made in numbering his "Hymn and Fuguing #18": "A mistake was made in numbering my duet for two saxophones of which you have the masters". Cowell then asks: "could you please informally scratch out 17 and put in 18 instead" and concludes with his "Hearty Greetings". Signed "Henry Cowell". Exploring the music of Africa Java and India he revolutionized American music with innovations such as tone clusters and directly plucking the piano's strings. New York, January 4, 1965. unknown
