1851List3661New York: Firth Pond & Co 1851. Folio sheet music illustrated tinted lithographic cover by Sarony & Major. 5 pp. including cover. Approximately 13 x 10 inches. Light toning and minor edge wear; archival tape to spine likely removed from a volume at some point very good overall. A particularly handsome illustrated edition of Stephen C. Foster’s sentimental ballad “Willie My Brave†featuring an elaborate tinted lithographic cover by the New York firm of Sarony & Major. The central image depicts a seated woman gazing out toward the sea while a greyhound rests its head upon her lap conveying the melancholy theme of absence and waiting suggested by the song. Surrounding vignettes include dramatic maritime scenes with a ship struggling in rough waters and another vessel sailing toward a distant harbor. The dog is especially well done while the accompanying ship in a storm drives home the point of the song. Among Foster’s many illustrated title pages this example is often considered one of the most attractive. According to William H. Fuld’s Pictorial Bibliography of First Editions of Stephen Foster 1957 the present example meets all points for the first edition initial state. The song itself enjoyed considerable popularity in the early 1850s and appeared in numerous subsequent printings. Firth, Pond & Co unknown

I read it on its publication and it is always close at hand as I write in my study. But alas I am in my 83rd year and my memory is not what it was. I ought to have looked at what you said before writing to the M. P. In any case I thank you for taking part in the fray which I think is not being quite fairly fought. My desire is only to establish truth.' Topics in the other letters include: the mystery of 'the Handel Keynsham printing'; 'the question whether Handel ever lived at Canons 'The Princely Chandos" gives the various residences of the D. of Chandos and it appears he did not go to Cavendish Square before 1727 All from Sydcote, Dulwich, S.E. 24581No date or place. 1947. London. From the Macqueen-Pope papers. See the two men’s entries in the Oxford DNB. MP is not named as the author but there is no doubt that he is. Item one has corrections in his hand. Both versions are simply titled ‘Will Fyffe’. The two versions exhibit a number of differences from one another. It is not clear where the obituary was published but it was probably the London magazine ‘Everybody’s’ for which MP contributed a weekly column. ONE: 4pp 4to double-spaced on four leaves. Autograph corrections to first sentence and an altogether more untidy effect including an additional passage on the last page which is correctly positioned in the second draft below suggest that this is an earlier draft. Begins: ‘It was a freak of fortune that made Will Fyffe into a music hall star instead of remaining on the legitimate stage where he had made his beginning as a small boy.’ Contains information not present in the second version including several astute assessments. For example: ‘Unlike Sir Harry Lauder the other great Scot of the Halls Will Fyffe was a realist. He could create a character and be it. It was not Will Fyffe at whom you gazed it was a gamekeeper a centenarian a Scots engineer on a steamship a guard on the Highland Railway - finding a report of the Battle of Waterloo in the lining of his ill fitting cap a country doctor a real country bumpkin the blacksmith at Gretna Green or the inebriated gentleman to whom Glasgow belonged on a Saturday night. He studied his types and he reproduced them magnificently. They were real people.’ Other topics include his mastery of make-up international popularity and ‘magnificent service’ in the First World War. TWO: 3pp 4to single-spaced on three leaves. More polished than One and with emendations deletions and recasting. Ends: ‘Our stage has lost one of its greatest artists and finest men. How fine an actor he was few knew although one celebrated critic glimpsed it when he wrote “Mr Fyffe has a sob here of which Garrick had bee proud.’ No date or place. [1947. London.] unknown

19084580Melbourne: Allan & Co 1908. First Australian edition. Sheet music. Very good. Folio 4pp. plus promotional materials. A very good copy generally clean and clearly removed from a binding at some point. Internal folded leaf is laid-in which seems to be as issued as there are no visible stitching/sewing holes or staple holes. Ernest R. Ball set the Dunbar poem to music and it was published widely in the United States. This contemporary Australian edition is predictably considerabye scarcer - we note two holdings both at the National Library of Australia. An important item for any Dunbar completist or anyone interested in the global reach of African-American poetry or music during this period. The words "Sung by John McCormack" a noted Irish singer of the period appear printed on the title leaf. Allan & Co unknown
