Very Rare Title - This is a 1983 2nd edition revised from a 1977 hardcover edition which included two additional co-authors: Tony Manno who died before publication of the book and Mancel Warrick father of Dionne and Dee Dee who died in 1977 after the publication of the first edition. It appears to be a Private Press publication. 8vo size stapled binding with inside covers the equivalent of dust jacket flaps; 101 pages with many pages of sheet music. The author and previous co-authors appear in photographs on inside back cover. Author photograph and biography are on back cover. From inside front cover: "This book discusses the history and musical forms of gospel music beginning with the spirituals of slave days and branching out into folksongs jubilees hymns anthems and other forms which culminate in the religious gospel and pop-gospel music known today. It deals in depth with the techniques of all these musicological forms and provides numerous examples of each including the transformation of one form to another." Book is slightly bowed from poor storage but may flatten under the weight of a very heavy book. Top of covers are lightly sunned and there is light soil on front cover. We note ink underlining on pages 6 31 34 and 36 brackets on page 24 and one creased page corner. Lightly bumped top back corner and last 20 or so pages. . 2nd. Stapled. Library stamp on upper portion of the title page in each volume and a number stamped lightly on verso. Bound in modern half-calf with marbled boards. Interior is generally clean; pages are mildly age toned with an occasional touch of light foxing; a couple of faint corner creases present; a small marginal tear on p. 157 of volume 2 is neatly sealed. Some spots of light staining present on outer edge of text block. Charles Burney 1726-1814 was an English musician and composer. In 1773 he was elected a member of the Royal Society. According to Andrew Deakins Musical Bibliography "The tour of which this book is the fruit was commenced in July 1772. Dr. Burney visited Brussels Antwerp Frankfort Munich Vienna Prague Dresden Leipzig Berlin and many other cities forming friendships with the Bach family J.A. Foxing to the page block edges and the end-papers still overall a nice clean VG or slightly better copy in like dustwrapper with light edgewear and shallow chipping at the head of the spine not affecting any lettering. The spine is browned with a tiny chip at the bottom left-hand edge of the spine towards the tail. Often found heavily worn due to the book's size this copy has lasted the test of time and shows well.
