It was founded in 1815 and is the third oldest musical organization in the U.S. Until 1873 the chorus did not admit women but did invite small numbers of them to sing for specific performances.<br>Â Â Â Â This is the explanation of the 1875 rule change and the pertinent extract from the by-laws that was given to women who were admitted to the chorus. => Accompanied by the membership card of Miss Jennie Cassidy an alto who was admitted for the 187677 season.
