Il presente volume nasce con un duplice intento: da una parte quello di offrire, allo studioso come all'amatore, una trattazione storica della popular music e del jazz non eminentemente nozionistica, dizionaristica o velleitariamente enciclopedica, opponendo a un approccio prettamente informativo la ricerca, l'indagine, l'analisi, l'esplorazione; dall'altra quello di fornire un utile supporto bibliografico a studenti e docenti di conservatori di musica e università. La storia che qui si racconta viene dunque a realizzarsi, secondo le iniziali intenzioni editoriali, senza mai prescindere da approfondimenti di vario genere (musicali, estetici, economici, sociali, tecnologici, politici, antropologici, ecc.), in un ampio respiro che, a perfetta metà strada tra lo studio accademico e l'appassionata lettura, tenta così di restituire una visione d'insieme della musica più fruita del nostro tempo.
