Red linen spine with lithographed front cover. In very good condition with a touch of marking and rubbing only. Slight bumping to the corners. Small area to the front cover with an old tape repair not particularly noticeable. Inside the thirty plates are in very good condition. Slightly darkened to the edges only. The plates are held in the binding by hinges and a few of the plates have been re-set / reinforced in position. Overall an excellent example. 320 by 210mm 12½ by 8¼ inches. Intended for the visual instruction of young people in schools and families. From the series: "Naturgeschichte des Tier- Pflanzen- und Mineralreichs in kolorirten Bildern nebst erläuterndem." . Première édition. 16 pages de texte 1 table des matières et 30 doubles pages de photos en couleurs. Dos en lin rouge et couverture lithographiée. En très bon état avec quelques marques et frottements seulement. Les coins sont légèrement abîmés. Une petite zone sur la couverture avant avec une ancienne réparation de ruban adhésif pas particulièrement visible. A l'intérieur les trente planches sont en très bon état. Légèrement assombries sur les bords seulement. Les planches sont maintenues dans la reliure par des charnières et quelques planches ont été remises en place / renforcées dans leur position. Dans l'ensemble il s'agit d'un excellent exemplaire. 320 x 210 mm 12½ x 8¼ pouces. Destiné à l'enseignement visuel des jeunes dans les écoles et les familles. Complete facsimile edition in the original format of the Codex 1164 of the Jewish Historical Institute in Warsaw.<br /> <br /> The Warsaw Codex 1164 of the Jewish Historical Institute is a picture Bible on 123 leaves illustrating the first five books of MosesPentateuch. It is not a continuous illustrated Bible but a collection of pictures with explanation and tiles. The only comparison in Jewish literature is the Sephardic Pessach-Hagadot. The Warsaw Codes is a unique copy of the lost woodcut series of the Pentateuch. The creation of the world is depicted at the beginning followed by the five books of Moses and it is closing with the description of Moses' death. Castellazzo's picture Pentateuch combines several traditions of depiction to a unique whole.<br /> <br /> The original Codex does not contain any clues of the previous owner's identity.There is also no explanation that the same manuscript carries the inventory number 926 in 1955 and the inventory number 1164 in 1982. The original manuscript created on the leaves of brindled paper showing a lot of foxed markings. On some of the pages a watermark is recognizable showing an anchor in a circle with a Star of David above. However because the sheets of paper were cut before they were used not a single of the watermarks is complete. Today the binding consist of a cardboard plate with a parchment spine.
