Although familiar from the 18th century keyboard music for four hands was largely restricted to ephemeral pieces or utilitarian arrangements of orchestral works. Mozart invested the genre with more ambition but as with the lied it was Schubert who took a marginal genre and made it central. His earliest works for piano duet were three fantasies D1 9 48 while a modest rondo D608 from January 1818 and four polonaises D599 and a sonata D617 of Mozartian proportions composed in Zseliz during the summer of that year mark the beginning of Schubert's sustained interest in the genre." The present edition is the fourteenth of fifty installments in the series publication of which was not completed until 1850. <br /> <br /> Schubert notated the vocal part of D716 in the bass F clef but despite its low range Diabelli changed it to the violin G clef and added some variants at the upper octave to make it performable for higher voices. <br /> <br /> D. 450 exists in two versions; the present edition includes the second. The first version was not published until 1895 as part of the complete edition. The German translation from Aeschylus The Eumenides is by Johann Mayrhofer 1787-1836 a friend of the composer.
