Nell'assenza, fra gli studi beethoveniani disponibili nella nostra lingua, di contributi biografici e bibliografici, il Beethoven di Maynard Solomon viene a colmare una lacuna evidentissima: Beethoven, onnipresente nella programmazione concertistica, radiofonica e discografica, come figura biografica è, da noi, uno sconosciuto, consegnato a poche nozioni e alcuni luoghi comuni. Ma l'interesse di questo libro non è solo in funzione delle lacune italiane. Vi è infatti un elemento in più rispetto alla scrupolosa documentazione e allo scaltrito esercizio critico, un elemento vistoso anche se non condizionante: la categoria dell'analisi psicanalitica come mezzo conoscitivo della personalità. L'autore, servendosi di una vasta gamma di categorie di interpretazione - estetica, storica, psicanalitica, sociologica -, fa luce sullo sviluppo psicologico del compositore e stabilisce nessi fra la vita e l'opera: «In questo senso» scrive «il mio libro è un saggio sull'interpretazione e sul significato: cercherò di scoprire il significato di alcune ambiguità e fissazioni nella vita di Beethoven, e di offrire alcune indicazioni sulla loro possibile importanza nei confronti della sua ricerca creativa».
