ill. Il Codice Atlantico è un'ampia raccolta dei fogli leonardiani. L'opera abbraccia l'intera carriera di Leonardo, per un periodo di oltre quarant'anni, a partire dal 1478. Vi si trova una ricca documentazione dei suoi contributi alla scienza meccanica e matematica, all'astronomia, alla geografia fisica, alla botanica, alla chimica e alla anatomia, disegni di strumenti di guerra e di macchine per volare. Il volume presenta inoltre la registrazione dei suoi pensieri attraverso favole e apologhi, aspetti teorici e pratici della scultura e della pittura, della prospettiva, fino ai materiali usati. Questo cofanetto è suddiviso in tre tomi: il primo comprende i volumi I-IV, il secondo i volumi V-VIII, il terzo i volumi IX-XII.

Second Edition, improved and enlarged, [vi],116,[1, advert & errata]pp., large paper, 6 folding engraved plates, contemporary ownership signatures to head of title, orig. boards (paper peeling), lacks spine but covers holding, uncut. First published in 1801 and fast became the standard work on the subject. Of this greatly enlarged second edition, an additional two engraved plates were added. It was deemed that this book should be printed on large paper so it was able to accommodate large format plates?this is noted in the advertisement following the title page.
