Presenta nuovi modi di pensare e i cambiamenti delle tecnologie endodontiche: dalla storia evolutiva al pretrattamento endodontico, alla pulizia e modellatura e all'otturazione 3D, dall'endodonzia interdisciplinare al restauro, nessun dettaglio viene omesso nel descrivere i metodi di trattamento necessari per il successo clinico. Dapprima assistente del Ponfick e del Westphal, fu dal 1882 al 1921 professore di psichiatria nell'università di Jena. Dedicò la sua vita allo studio della paralisi progressiva, della neurastenia, dell’isteria e dell’epilessia e fu psichiatra di fiducia del celebre Friederich Nietzsche.
