Casselberry's discovery was a less expensive method of decomposing liquids. He used electricity and during his experiments found that two decomposing cells attached to a galvanic battery or magneto-electric machine will generate twice the gas as a single cell. Prior to Casselberry's experiment it had been assumed that the resulting gas would be half as much as the electricity would be split into the two cells.
