The first article in this volume prints the revised 1904 table of atomic weights set up by the International Atomic Weight Commission. "Atomgewicht. - Auf Grund der neueren Untersuchungen bis 1904 über Atomgewicht ist von der internationalen Atomgewichts Kommission folgende Tabelle der Atomgewichte aufgestellt worden.". The title page of this copy bears the ink stamp of insulin pioneer Dr. Ing Harald Pedersen who with his brother Thorvald started Novo Terapeutisk Laboratorium in 1925. "In 1923 the engineer Harald Pedersen joined Nordisk to build the machines used for insulin production. His brother Thorvald Pedersen was later recruited to analyze the chemical processes during insulin production. However Thorvald Pedersen did not get on with Hagedorn and in 1924 Hagedorn fired him. Out of loyalty to his brother Harald res-igned and the two brothers set up on their own. By 1924 they too were successfully producing insulin The brothers named their company Novo Terapeutisk Laboratorium Novo and Nordisk became the world's leading manufacturers of insulin. Over the next 65 years both companies rapidly expanded. Both established large research units and competed furiously to be the first on the market with new products for the treatment of diabetes. This copy is from the personal library and bears the small ink stamp of contributor Robert B. Sosman who wrote this volume's section VII pp. 191-235 on Conductivity and Ionization of Ammonium Hydroxide Ammonium Chloride and Acetic Acid. Tipped to the front endpaper is a report on research conducted at Massachusetts Institute of Technology MIT mentioning both Noyes and Sosman. Original blue-green cloth with gilt lettering still bright as new. A geophysicist and physical chemist Robert Browning Sosman also authored THE PHASES OF SILICA 1965 New Brunswick: Rutgers University Press. Sosman received his Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1907 at the age of 26. By 1908 he had joined the Geo-Physical Laboratory of the Carnegie Institution. Dr. Sosman worked at the Geo-Physical Laboratory for 20 years serving 8 years as Assistant Director. During World War I his contributions there were instrumental in establishing America's capacity for manufacturing optical glass. In 1928 he left to join the United States Steel Corporation as Assistant Director of Research. Following his retirement from U.S. Steel in 1947 he became visiting professor of Ceramics at Rutgers University. Dr. Sosman was a past president of the American Ceramic Society. In his honor the Society established The Robert B. Sosman Award "the highest recognition of scientific accomplishment given by the Basic Science Division. in recognition of outstanding achievement in basic science of an area that results in a significant impact to the field of ceramics."
