Questo libro si occupa della crisi della parola e del trionfo dell'immagine. La parola è essenziale per il discorso razionale, intersoggettivo, analitico. L'immagine è seducente, sintetica, a volte ipnotica. Esalta l'emotività. I mezzi di comunicazione elettronica odierni vivono di immagini, sono fondamentali per il predominio dell'audiovisivo e per l'obsolescenza della lettura. L'autore non è un neo-luddista. Non si schiera contro l'innovazione tecnica in quanto tale. Semplicemente prende buona nota che i media non mediano, che adolescenti, giovani e giovani adulti, così appassionatamente devoti ai loro gadget elettronici, spesso non sono in grado di padroneggiare razionalmente il flusso torrentizio delle informazioni indiscriminate e di costruirsi una loro tavola delle priorità. La tentazione, per i genitori indaffarati fuori casa, per insegnanti demotivati e per chiese deserte, è forte: si tende ad affidare ai media, eticamente irresponsabili, il difficile compito della socializzazione primaria.
