Gli scritti di questo libro sono apparsi tra inizio 2000 e fine 2005, negli anni dell'11 settembre, delle guerre in Afghanistan e in Iraq, dell'instaurazione in Italia di un regime di populismo mediatico. Leggendoli ci si accorge che sin dalla fine dello scorso millennio si sono verificati drammatici passi all'indietro. Dopo la caduta del Muro di Berlino si erano dovuti riesumare gli atlanti del 1914, e da tempo le nostre famiglie ospitavano di nuovo servi di colore, come in "Via col vento". A poco a poco col videoregistratore si è passati dalla televisione al cinematografo, con Internet e le pay-tv Meucci l'ha avuta vinta su Marconi (telegrafia con i fili) e ora l'i-Pod ha reinventato la radio. Terminata la Guerra Fredda, abbiamo avuto con Afghanistan e Iraq il ritorno della Guerra Calda; riesumando il Grande Gioco kiplinghiano, si è tornati allo scontro tra Islam e Cristianità, compresi gli Assassini suicidi del Veglio della Montagna, e al grido di "mamma li turchi!" È risorto il fantasma del Pericolo Giallo, è stata riaperta la polemica antidarwiniana del XIX secolo, abbiamo di nuovo l'antisemitismo e i fascisti (per quanto molto post, ma alcuni sono ancora gli stessi) al governo, si è riaperto il contenzioso post-cavouriano tra Chiesa e Stato. Sembra quasi che la Storia, affannata per i balzi fatti nei due millenni precedenti, si riavvoltoli su se stessa, marciando velocemente a passo di gambero!
