Aanvankelijk leek Willem IV (1711-1751) in de wieg gelegd voor een bescheiden rol op het politieke toneel, als stadhouder van de Noord- Nederlandse provincies. Maar na een Franse inval in de zuidelijke Nederlanden tijdens de Oostenrijkse Successieoorlog (1740-1748) werd hij, als enig levende vertegenwoordiger van het vorstengeslacht Nassau, in korte tijd stadhouder van alle gewesten. Zijn aantreden betekende het einde van het Tweede Stadhouderloze Tijdperk. Hoewel er talrijke portretten van hem bestaan, weten we betrekkelijk weinig over het leven van Willem IV. Hij stond bekend als vredelievend, maar ging een leven lang gebukt onder een slechte gezondheid. Zijn vroege overlijden riep aan zijn groeiende invloed een halt toe. Wie was deze prins, die tussen de gekroonde hoofden van Europa ? zijn schoonvader was George II van Groot-Brittannie, zijn oom Frederik I van Zweden, zijn neef Frederik II de Grote van Pruisen ? een geheel eigen plaats innam? Fred Jagtenberg schetst in deze levensbeschrijving ?van de wieg tot het graf ? niet alleen een beeld van Willem IV als stadhouder, maar ook als zoon, echtgenoot en vader. De ingrijpende, soms zeer schokkende gebeurtenissen van zijn tijd spelen op de achtergrond voortdurend mee.
