XIX, pp 144 con varie figure xilografiche di meridiane, strumenti di navigazione, notturnale, bussola, varie tabelle di problemi astronomici, calendari, latitudine e longitudine ed, in fine, la ricca: ?Table of difference of latitude et departure in minutes and tenth parts, to every degree and quarter point of the compass for the exact working of a travers?. Probabilmente prima edizione di uno dei piu' popolari calendari marinari inglesi della quale non abbiamo trovato riferimenti bibliografici o vendite. Houzerau-Lancaster n 15489, lo dichiara apparso dal 1727 al 1749. Sotheran n 4772 e 19929 ha edizioni posteriori, difettose, a caro prezzo e nulla riferisce circa una prima edizione. Purtroppo esemplare mediocre e scompleto. Mancano 4 carte (da pag. 9 a 16). Rifilato e macchiato con strappetti e vecchie note ai margini a causa dell?uso a cui era destinato. In ogni caso accettabile per la sua eccezionale rarita'. Il Census nazionale Opac SBN non registra alcun esemplare nelle biblioteche italiane. Volume in 4° antico, legatura coeva in cartonato alla bodoniana, frontespizio (piccola mancanza per elidere un nome a pennino), al verso grande vignetta incisa in rame con armi nobiliari (verosimilmente del casato di Ignatius Handel), qualche finalino di grandi dimensioni. Le carte iniziali contengono una lettera di Joannes J.A. Reibelt (editore della Disputatio) a I. Handel e la Praefatio ad lectorem. 4 cc., 24, 108, 63, 1 pp.. Studio accuratissimo sui magneti, il magnetismo, l'influenza d'esso nella fisica, in astronomia, nella navigazione e quant'altro. Particolare e sorprendente una certa propensione dell’autore per la disciplina astrologica (aliena rispetto al contenuto della tesi, che è squisitamente scientifico) infatti nel punto xxxix Pfenning afferma che la praedeterminatio physica est superflua & inutilis e videtur laedere libertatem humanam. Ancor più nel punto lxvii, precisa che la cometa, stella crinita vel barbata, Ex sua natura non semper aliquid fatale portendit: assumitur tamen plerumque à divina justitia in prodromum futurarum calamitatum: che è affermazione di chiara portata astrologica. Infine, nell’ultima parte (una sorta di dizionario astronomico-geografico), l’autore dedica 4 pagine (pagine 30-34) alle Case in cui lo Zodiaco è diviso figuratamente e agli aspetti tra i Pianeti. Opera davvero molto rara (da anni assente dai cataloghi di vendita) ed interessante. Uno fra i primi studi sul fenomeno. In Italia presente una sola copia alla biblioteca Galileo di Firenze (che è corredata di 13 tavole in rame in fondo al volume, assenti invece nella presente copia). Mende e piccole mancanze alla brossura, cerniere fragili, qualche foglio in parte slegato. Edizione originale, stampata ad ampi margini su bella carta forte, quasi del tutto esente da bruniture, tranne che per le citate mende alla brossura, in buone condizioni. Di notevolissima importanza ed interesse ed estremamente rara.

Hardcover first printing with dustjacket original acetate cover and gold commemorative coin commemorative bookplate on front end-paper has an illustration of a Viking rocket in flight and states "This book is presented with the compliments of Martin Company at Baltimore Maryland at the opening of Viking Hall.The Hayden Planetarium New York.June 30 1955" author has signed this copy on the half-title page the gold coin was also issued to commemorate the opening of Viking Hall and states same along with a raised illustration of the Viking rocket condition is as follows: book has minor flaws only: two tape-ghosts on the rear end-paper where original acetate cover was attached on page 59 the word "Reaction" is underlined in ink there are no other markings excellent condition overall the dustjacket is also very well-preserved it has very light wear at the spine-extremities and a tan tape-mark on the rear flap the original price is present and a professional mylar cover is included the original acetate cover which contains a quotation from Lao-tse is quite scuffed and has a circular area of glue residue from where the commemorative coin was attached by the previous owner the coin itself has a darkened area on the back side from the glue but the quote "The skyline is a promise not a bound" Masefield is readable the front side of the coin is flawless author Rosen was the scientific officer in charge of development of the Viking rocket and his book chronicles the development and flights of the early Vikings illustrated with diagrams and 32 photographs scarce item and quite an addition to any serious library on rocketry/space exploration; Signed by Author .
