8vo. 42 pp., final blank. With a lithographic plate. Contemporary wrappers. Very rare study of the defects of the umbilical cord, with a plate (showing embryos) lithographed after the author's own drawings. With this habilitation, Froriep (1804-61) gained a Professorship of Medicine in Berlin, but he had to forsake this career in 1845 when his father, himself once a great surgeon and obstetrician, fell ill and Robert had to take over the publishing house "Landes-Industrie-Comptoir" which Ludwig Friedrich v. Froriep - the son-in-law of and successor to the famous publisher Bertuch - had headed. A correspondent with Goethe, Robert Froriep also taught anatomic drawing at the Academy of Fine Arts. "Obgleich er in den von ihm besonders cultivirten Wissenschaften, der beschreibenden und pathologischen Anatomie, keine hervorragenden Entdeckungen gemacht hat, hat er durch seine zahlreichen Unternehmungen [...] die Wissenschaft wesentlich gefördert und namentlich zur Popularisierung von kostspieligen ausländischen Abbildungswerken, die ohne ihn daselbst nur wenig bekannt geworden wären, wesentlich beigetragen" (Hirsch II, 455). - Slight waterstaining near end (mainly affecting the plate's lower margin). Only three copies in the U.S. (Johns Hopkins-Welch Med. Library; Coll. of Physicians of PA; CRL Chicago). Hirsch II, 454. OCLC 258086847. Not in Kayser, Engelmann, Wellcome or Waller.

"In 1762 the elector palatine, Karl Theodor, who was very interested in the arts and sciences, constructed an astronomical observatory for Mayer at Schwetzingen, his summer residence. In 1772-1774 a second and larger observatory was erected at Mannheim, then the capital of the electoral Palatinate. This observatory was well equipped for the time, with instruments from the best British workshops [...] Appointed court astronomer, Mayer was relieved of his duties as a theologian (the Jesuit order was dissolved by Pope Clement XIV in 1773, which made such a step easier)" (DSB IX, 231). Goedeke IV, 475, 3. Poggendorf II, 596. Cobres 301 ("excellent").
8vo. 28 pp. Upper cover preserves original green printed wrapper. Very rare, curious medical dissertation on physiognomy - in particular, how emotions and traits of character express themselves in the human face. The study of physiognomy is mainly associated with Charles Le Brun and Johann Kaspar Lavater in earlier centuries (and their approach resounds in the present dissertation), but it is well worth remembering that Charles Darwin made his principal contribution to human psychology with his book on "The Expression of Emotion in Animals and Men" as late as 1872, a study of genetically determined aspects of behaviour. - Some slight waterstaining to the top corner of the first few leaves. Apparently printed with a minimal press-run: no other copy traceable in library or collection catalogues internationally.

He was born in Thessaloniki (Salonica), his father was Müderris Yusuf Efendi. Her mother Zühre Hanim and Atatürk's mother Zübeyde Hanim were sibling grandchildren. He played an important role in the Konya Irrigation Project, (1907-1913). This report is the first one on the Menderes [= Meander] river improvement in 1924. The Büyük Menderes River (historically the Maeander or Meander), is a river in southwestern Turkey. It rises in west-central Turkey near Dinar before flowing west through the Büyük Menderes graben until reaching the Aegean Sea in the proximity of the ancient Ionian city Miletus. The word "meander" is used to describe a winding pattern, after the river. The river rises in a spring near Dinar and flows to Lake Isikli. After passing the Adigüzel Dam and the Cindere Dam, the river flows past Nazilli, Aydin, and Söke before it drains into the Aegean Sea. The Maeander was a celebrated river of Caria in Asia Minor. It appears earliest in the Catalog of Trojans of Homer's Iliad along with Miletus and Mycale. In this report, there's usual information on the Meander River with its geography and history. The second chapter includes the reasons for the improvement of the river and accounts about it with a detailed table. This is an early water engineering book printed in the Ottoman Empire. Extremely rare. First and Only Edition. Not in Özege.; Not in OCLC.; Four copies in the National Library of Turkey.

4to. 24 pp. With 2 tables, one of which folding, a lithographed folding plan depicting 14 train stations, a large folding panoramic view of the railway track with 14 smaller marginal views, and a folding view of architectural monuments, mainly railway bridges. With lithographed plans of Vienna and Graz to pastedowns. Original printed boards. Illustrated description of the newly established railway between Mürzzuschlag and Graz, which opened on 21 October 1844. Prepared by the Paris-born railway engineer Demarteau, this work reflects the importance of the Südbahn - a railway project that promised economic prosperity to southern Austria and, upon its completion in 1854, resulted in a continuous railway track from Vienna to Ljubljana. The "Atlas" is particularly remarkable for its fine lithographs, prepared by August Grube in Vienna, some after designs by Rudolf von Alt and F. Weiss. The large folding panorama of the track, including an elevational and longitudinal profile, is decorated with charming views of the towns of Semmering, Krieglach, Langenwang, Kindberg, Kapfenberg, Bruck, Peggau, Judendorf-Straßengel and Graz. Views of prominent railway bridges and station buildings, as well as plans of the 14 stations along the route from Mürzzuschlag to Graz, complete the picture. In addition, the work gives an introduction to the history of Styria and the construction of the track. - The 24-page introduction and the two tables are included in French in a separate booklet at the end of the volume. The French title is given on the lower board. - Binding very slightly duststained, still a fine copy of an uncommon work. Schlossar 100. Nebehay/Wagner 140. Metzeltin 884. Neuner 961.
