Rarissime profil longitudinal rarissime d'un projet ferroviaire, daté du 5 octobre 1881, imprimé sur lin. Cette ligne de chemin de fer devait relier le port de Rio Grande, dans le Rio Grande do Sul, à la ville de Bagé, près de la frontière uruguayenne. Ce document présente le profil longitudinal complet de la ligne, à l'échelle 1/4000 pour les longueurs et 1/400 pour les hauteurs, et indique les déblais, les remblais, les rampes, les plaines et les gares intermédiaires, notamment celles de Rio Grande et de Quinta. Outre le profil de la voie ferrée, le document comprend un dessin d'une locomotive de l'époque, accompagné de calculs manuscrits de ses performances et de ses proportions. Le lin sur lequel il a été imprimé est plus résistant que le papier, ce qui indique un document conçu pour supporter des manipulations récurrentes sur les chantiers et dans les bureaux d'études. L'ensemble comprend deux cartes cyanotypes (plans) d'époque : 1) Carte générale du tracé, représentant la ligne de chemin de fer partant du port de Rio Grande, traversant des localités telles que Quinta, Piratini, Herval, Candiota et se terminant à Bagé. Elle indique les principaux éléments géographiques comme la lagune de Lagoa dos Patos, l'océan Atlantique, les rivières et les routes royales. Les noms des gares sont accompagnés du kilométrage et des distances cumulées ; et 2) Profil altimétrique de la ligne, illustrant graphiquement les variations d'altitude le long du parcours, avec les distances respectives entre les gares. Le graphique à l'échelle illustre la progression du niveau de la mer à Rio Grande jusqu'aux hautes altitudes de la région de Bagé, révélant les difficultés techniques liées aux rampes et aux pentes. Signé par l'ingénieur responsable à l'époque. Les deux cartes sont en bon état. Dimensions : 42 × 31 cm. Le profil, en très bon état, présente quelques marques ou détails mineurs dus à l'âge et est entièrement restaurable si souhaité. Il est conservé (plié – 21,5 x 33 cm) dans un coffret moderne doublé de velours. Dimensions totales du coffret fermé : 4 x 25,5 x 35,5 cm. Le projet de la ligne de chemin de fer Rio Grande-Bagé s'inscrit dans le cadre du développement du réseau ferroviaire du Second Empire, visant à relier l'intérieur pastoral et frontalier du Rio Grande do Sul au port de Rio Grande. En 1881, année de rédaction de ce document, la Province était le théâtre d'intenses débats concernant les concessions ferroviaires, souvent menés par des ingénieurs et des entreprises étrangères, notamment françaises et anglaises, chargées du tracé, du financement et de la réalisation. Cet exemplaire constitue non seulement un témoignage de l'histoire du génie ferroviaire au Brésil impérial, mais aussi une illustration matérielle de l'influence française dans la construction du réseau de transport du sud du pays. La ligne de chemin de fer Rio Grande-Bagé trouve son origine dans le projet présenté au gouvernement impérial par l'ingénieur José Felipe Neri Ewbank da Câmara (Porto Alegre, 17 avril 1843 - Rio de Janeiro, 3 mars 1890) en octobre 1872. Ce projet prévoyait une ligne reliant Rio Grande à la ligne Porto Alegre-Urugaiana à São Gabriel. Le 10 septembre 1873, un décret autorisant sa construction fut signé, le même décret qui autorisait la ligne Porto Alegre-Urugaiana. En 1874, la concession fut accordée à l'homme d'affaires Higino Correa Durão pour exploiter cette ligne jusqu'à Alegrete. Higino n'ayant pas respecté les délais contractuels, la concession fut renégociée par le gouvernement avec les hommes d'affaires Miguel Gonçalves da Cunha et James Gracie Taylor, qui la conservèrent pendant 90 ans. Le projet prévoyait deux phases : la première entre Rio Grande et Bagé, parallèle à la frontière uruguayenne, et la seconde jusqu’à Alegrete. Comme pour de nombreux projets de l’époque, ces hommes d’affaires renégocièrent la concession avec la Compagnie Impériale des Chemins de Fer du Rio Grande do Sul le 11 décembre 1880. Durant la construction de la voie ferrée, la Compagnie Impériale fusionna avec la Southern Brazilian Railway Company le 17 février 1883. La construction du chemin de fer Rio Grande-Bagaé débuta le 27 novembre 1881. À l’instar des autres chemins de fer de l’époque, des techniques et des matériaux plus simples furent adoptés afin de minimiser les coûts. Les travaux se déroulèrent comme prévu et le premier tronçon, entre Rio Grande et Bagé, fut inauguré le 2 décembre 1884, sur une longueur de 283 km. Le raccordement à la ligne Porto Alegre-Uruguaiana à Cacequi ne fut réalisé que le 8 octobre 1900 avec l'achèvement du tronçon entre São Gabriel et São Sebastião. La ligne resta sous le contrôle de la Compagnie du Sud jusqu'au 6 juin 1905, date à laquelle sa concession fut reprise par le gouvernement fédéral et transférée à la Compagnie Auxiliaire. Transportant du bétail et de la viande séchée jusqu'au port de Rio Grande, la ligne a longtemps été perçue comme un symbole de prospérité par les locaux. Cependant, dès la fin du 19e siècle, son trafic commençait à diminuer en raison des prix élevés du fret, d'un service parfois douteux et de l'interruption du service ferroviaire par la Révolution fédéraliste de 1893-5.
