Un dialogo inevitabile perché il continuo e il discreto «sono un dato della mente umana, che pensa necessariamente l’uno e l’altro, ed è naturale che passi dall’uno all’altro». Più che categorie della Natura – a cui si potrebbero assimilare le immagini del mare e dei granelli di sabbia – continuo e discreto sono «i poli di una fondamentale complementarità del pensiero di tutti i tempi» e le loro applicazioni arrivano ovunque: dai numeri irrazionali ai pixel che compongono le immagini digitali, agli algoritmi proliferanti su cui si regge il nostro mondo. In questo libro Paolo Zellini non si limita a ripercorrere – con la precisione e la profondità di indagine che lo contraddistinguono – la storia della millenaria contesa tra due potenze complici e nemiche, ma va molto oltre: ci aiuta finalmente a delimitarne i territori, risvegliandoci dal «sonno dogmatico» che impediva di coglierne i rispettivi ruoli. Fin dall’antichità siamo abituati a pensare il continuo come un primum, un insieme ideale, autosufficiente, ovunque denso e compatto, da cui ogni cosa ha origine. Allo stesso tempo, per ragioni di utilità ed efficacia, accettiamo che quel primum si trovi anche in mezzo ai numeri, e quindi nel discreto. Eppure, afferma Zellini «ciò che conosciamo effettivamente è solo il discreto» e tutto il calcolo moderno si basa sull’informazione insita nelle serie di numeri che approssimano elementi di un continuo che non potremo conoscere mai. Perché dunque non capovolgere la prospettiva e pensare il continuo come «un’approssimazione del discreto»? Questa l’audace tesi di Zellini, che ruota intorno al circolo vizioso par excellence della matematica, lasciandone intravedere una possibile via d’uscita. Ma allora che cosa resta del continuo? È davvero qualcosa di cui dovremmo o potremmo disfarci? Sarebbe un grave errore pensarlo. Anche se inconoscibile, il continuo rimane un presupposto ineliminabile, un abisso senza fondo «più oscuro e impenetrabile dello stesso infinito». E «nelle tenebre di quell’abisso, di quella totalità amorfa e indefinibile che ci circonda da ogni parte, non smette mai di brillare immutato un tesoro».
