Il a paru à l'origine en 8 livraisons dans les Nouveaux exercices de mathématiques en 1835; il s'inscrit dans la continuité ses travaux précédents, publiés à Paris en 1830. Ce mémoire a paru quant à lui à Prague, où le mathématicien était précepteur du duc de Bordeaux en exil. Titre et avant-propos des Nouveaux exercices de 1835 rajoutés parmi les feuillets liminaires.
