Second edition of the first textbook of differential calculus which quickly disseminated the concepts and early development of the calculus of Bernoulli and Leibniz throughout Europe originally published anonymously in 1696. L’Hospital had arranged to receive private tutoring from Bernoulli in the new calculus and even after unknowingly sending Bernoulli’s solution of de Beune’s problem to Huygens without giving him credit was able to arrange with Bernoulli to continue their arrangement for a stipend. The last chapter of this textbook contains what is now known as “L’Hospital’s rule†for finding the limiting value of a fraction whose numerator and denominator tend to zero actually the work of Bernoulli.
