In-4°,legatura in mezza pelle con titolo al dorso Studiò nel collegio degli scolopi dove ebbe come maestro Francesco Maria Gaudio, dimostrando una precoce disposizione all’apprendimento delle scienze matematiche. La fama pubblica che lo circondò gli procurò il posto di professore di matematica dei cadetti nobili di San Pietroburgo. Lì Pessuti incontrò Leonhard Euler, che lo indirizzò agli studi della matematica superiore e lo impiegò in alcuni suoi calcoli. Con la protezione del cardinale Fabrizio Ruffo, potente tesoriere di papa Pio VI, Pessuti ottenne, nel 1787, la cattedra di fisica matematica nella Sapienza romana, affiancando in un primo tempo il suo maestro Gaudio. Una svolta nella vita di Pessuti come in quella di tanti intellettuali romani della fine del Settecento (per esempio, Costantini, Gianvincenzo Petrini, Faustino Gagliuffi, Ennio Quirino Visconti) si ebbe con la proclamazione, il 15 febbraio 1798, della Repubblica Romana e della fine del potere temporale della Chiesa. Pessuti fu uno dei consoli provvisori della Repubblica alla quale Gaspard Monge e Pierre Daunou diedero una costituzione modellata su quella francese dell’anno terzo, con nomi adattati all’antica Repubblica romana (i direttori divennero i consoli, il Consiglio legislativo il Tribunato, il Consiglio dei seniori il Senato). Monge provvide al riassetto del territorio del nuovo Stato e alla creazione dell’Istituto nazionale della Repubblica Romana, di cui Pessuti fu uno dei presidenti. Pessuti, già membro dell’Accademia delle scienze di Mantova (1789) e di Torino (1790), fu fatto socio nel 1803 della Società Italiana, fondata da Anton Maria Lorgna. Sulle Memorie di matematica e fisica della Società Italiana trovarono spazio i suoi nuovi lavori di matematica: Nuove considerazioni su di alcune proprietà de’ coefficienti della nota formula del binomio newtoniano (t. XI, 1804); Considerazioni su di un problema meccanico (t. XIII, 1807); Sopra un metodo di approssimazione proposto senza dimostrazione da Simpson (t. XIII, 1807); Teoria dell’azione capillare del sig. Laplace (XIV, p. I, 1809); Nuovo metodo per la trigonometria sferica (t. XV, 1811). Egli continuava a essere uno studioso notevolmente aggiornato e trovava spazio per investigazioni di matematica pura che non si era concesso dal periodo del suo apprendistato matematico.
