Roy. 8vo., First Edition, with numerous photographs in the text; original photographic wrappers, wire-stitched as issued, a near fine copy. Second volume of the author's collections of veterans' stories (the first volume was issued in 1994). The RNPS was unique and boasted its own rules and regs. Manned mainly by ex-fishermen and armed with obsolete weaponry, it suffered heavily in the first years of the war. Still a grossly under-written aspect of the RN in WWII. This second volume is for some reason far scarcer then the first.

About The Book : The Kath?sarits?gara is a large work. Each book comprises a number of stories loosely strung together, by being narrated for the recreation or information of the same individuals, or arising out of their adventures. These are Udayana, king of Kosambi, and his son Naravahanadatta. The marriage of the latter with various damsels of terrestrial or celestial origin, and his elevation to the rank of king of the Vidyadharas, a class of heavenly spirits, are the leading topics of most of the books; but they merely constitute the skeleton of the composition, the substance being made up of stories growing out of these circumstances, or springing from one another with an ingenuity of intricacy which is one of the great charms of all such collections. About The Author : Somadeva Bhatta was an eleventh century writer from Kashmir. Not much is known about him except that his father's name was Rama and he composed his work (probably during the years 1063-81 CE) for the entertainment of the queen Suryamati, a princess of Jalandhara and wife of King Ananta of Kashmir. The queen was quite distraught as it was a time when the political situation in Kashmir was 'one of discontent, intrigue, bloodshed and despair'.Though he was a Shaiva Brahmin, he was respectful of Buddhism and some of the tales in the Kathasaritsagara show Buddhist influences.Revised by Pansikar Wasudev Laxman Sastri has written famous books, like, Panchdashi with commentary; Yajnavalkya with the commentary, Kavyapradipa (An old and rare book); and many more, the master piece of all is The Ramayana of Valmeki a curious amalgamation of the aforementioned three mediums of teaching. Tutinama literal meaning "Tales of a Parrot", is a 14th-century series of 52 stories in Persian. The work remains well-known largely because of a number of lavishly illustrated manuscripts, especially a version containing 250 miniature paintings was commissioned by the Mughal Emperor, Akbar in the 1550s. The Persian text used was redacted in 14th century AD from an earlier anthology 'Seventy Tales of the Parrot' in Sanskrit compiled under the title Sukasaptati (a part of katha literature) dated to the 12th century AD. In India, parrots (in light of their purported conversational abilities) are popular as storytellers in works of fiction. Georg Friedrich Wilhelm Rosen, (1820-1891), was a German (Lippe / Prussian) orientalist and diplomat. He studied in Berlin and Leipzig. From 1844, he was a dragoman at the Prussian embassy in Constantinople. From 1853 he was the Prussian consul in Jerusalem. From 1867 he was Consul General of the North German Confederation (from 1871, the German Empire) in Belgrade. In 1875, Rosen returned to Detmold, where, in May 1907, the Rosenstraße was named in his honor.

Gift inscription from the author to the half-title. Light shelfwear. ; In this, the first modern study of the ancient fairytale, Graham Anderson asks whether the familiar children's fairytale of today existed in the ancient world. He examines texts from the classical period and finds many stories which resemble those we know today, including: * a Jewish Egyptian Cinderella* a Snow White whose enemy is the goddess Artemis* a Pied Piper at Troy. He puts forward many previously unsuspected candidates as classical variants of the modern fairytale and argues that the degree of violence and cruelty in the ancient tales means they must have been meant for adults. ; 256 pages
