Provenance: The set belonged to Edwin Wolf II (1911 1991) - famous as the Librarian of the Library Company of Philadelphia, and as a collector, and an employee of the renowned Rosenbach Co. from 1930 to 1952. The Family Album purchased a large part of his collection of early books in 1992. About this work : The world famous tales and fables of Jean de La Fontaine (1621-1695), neatly printed in verse, are joined by a 'Dissertation sur la Joconde' by Nicolas Boileau Despreaux (1636-1711); and the best work of the great illustrators & engravers Charles Eisen (1720-1778) and Pierre-Philippe Choffard (1730-1809). Justly considered one of the greatest examples of French rococo illustration. The Fermiers Generaux, an entrepreneurial financial association responsible for gathering and banking certain kinds of taxes, commissioned this edition of La Fontaine's zesty tales. Determined that the book should be the best of its kind, they allowed their agent, the Chevalier d'Agincourt, unlimited resources. It is still provocative to consider that patronage of the arts by this new plutocracy produced the greatest monument and triumph of this renowned age of illustration. Fine Fine German Original yellow cloth bdg. Dust wrapper. Cr. 8vo. (19 x 12 cm). In German. 415, [1] p. Edition of this book which was translated by Rosen, directly from Turkish text. Tutinama literal meaning "Tales of a Parrot", is a 14th-century series of 52 stories in Persian. The work remains well-known largely because of a number of lavishly illustrated manuscripts, especially a version containing 250 miniature paintings was commissioned by the Mughal Emperor, Akbar in the 1550s. The Persian text used was redacted in 14th century AD from an earlier anthology 'Seventy Tales of the Parrot' in Sanskrit compiled under the title Sukasaptati (a part of katha literature) dated to the 12th century AD. In India, parrots (in light of their purported conversational abilities) are popular as storytellers in works of fiction. Georg Friedrich Wilhelm Rosen, (1820-1891), was a German (Lippe / Prussian) orientalist and diplomat. He studied in Berlin and Leipzig. From 1844, he was a dragoman at the Prussian embassy in Constantinople. From 1853 he was the Prussian consul in Jerusalem. From 1867 he was Consul General of the North German Confederation (from 1871, the German Empire) in Belgrade. In 1875, Rosen returned to Detmold, where, in May 1907, the Rosenstraße was named in his honor.

Wide margined; uncut; deckle edges. Some slight age stain. Old tape repair at frontis hinge. No front free fly-leaf. Early vellum backed marbled boards binding. An attractive (if mis-leading) edition. The Decameron is a collection of novellas by Italian author Giovanni Boccaccio (1313-1375). It is a 14th-century medieval allegory told as a frame story encompassing 100 tales by ten young people. Boccaccio probably began composing the work in 1350, and finished it in 1351 or 1353. The bawdy tales of love in The Decameron range from the erotic to the tragic. Tales of wit, practical jokes, and life lessons contribute to the mosaic. In addition to its literary import, it documents life in 14th-century Italy - From Wiki. A false imprint - Because of its sometimes erotic nature, printers and publishers were often loathe to claim the Decameron as their own. Therefore 'Amsterdamo' appears in the imprint of this edition. It was not printed in Amsterdam, but almost certainly in Venice, by Antonio Locatelli. There are several similar, but different editions. They are identified by examination of the occasional ornaments and a notice at the very end of volume two, which in our example reads: "Si Vende Lire Venti Venete." (Sell this for 20 pounds).
