br. "Quando io do da mangiare a un povero, tutti mi dicono santo. Ma quando chiedo perché i poveri non hanno cibo, allora tutti mi chiamano comunista" diceva dom Hélder Câmara, proprio per questa sua frase definito il Vescovo rosso, uno dei vescovi latinoamericani più amati, grazie alla sua passione per una Chiesa povera e dei poveri, alla sua attenzione per le persone e alla sua fede incarnata. Questo libro è dedicato alla sua figura. Ma non è una biografia. È la testimonianza di un fratello che è stato suo discepolo e collaboratore, associato al suo ministero soprattutto nella pastorale ecumenica e nel lavoro con i giovani; e che ha scritto queste pagine, dense di emozione e di ammirazione, per condividerne con i lettori l'eredità spirituale: "per non lasciar cadere la profezia". Ed è, insieme, una finestra aperta sulla storia, piena di luci e di ombre, della Chiesa latinoamericana negli ultimi decenni del secolo scorso. Così le vicende individuali di Hélder Câmara e di Marcelo Barros, dense ed emblematiche, non si esauriscono mai in se stesse ma si propongono come parte di una storia collettiva forse irripetibile, ben tratteggiata nelle lucide prefazioni di Claudia Fanti e José Comblin, fatta di attività pastorale e di impegno politico, di Teologia della liberazione e di rapporto profondo con la Chiesa "ufficiale".
ril. Tra le figure più note della Chiesa universale e della società del secolo scorso vi è certamente dom Hélder Câmara. Convertito, come Oscar Romero, dai poveri e dai perseguitati, divenne ben presto la loro voce. Di fronte alla tentazione della violenza, ha indicato senza sosta la strada della conversione e della nonviolenza. Fu guardato con sospetto da ampi settori della Chiesa e dei dicasteri vaticani, ma ebbe sempre il sostegno di Paolo VI che lo considerava un profeta. Radicato nella Parola di Dio, dom Hélder ha cercato di tradurre nella realtà il sogno di un altro mondo possibile, basato sulla giustizia, sulla fraternità e sulla pace, e quello di una Chiesa aperta allo Spirito, povera e serva del Regno.
