Importante para o estudo da recepção da obra de Camões na transição do século XVIII para o século XIX. </p>_x000d_<p>A confrontação entre Os Lusíadas 1572 de Luís de Camões e O Oriente 1814 do Padre José Agostinho de Macedo reflete um dos maiores duelos literários da história de Portugal. Enquanto Camões fundou a língua moderna através de uma epopeia mitológica onde a mitologia greco-latina é sagrada e funcional e deuses como Vénus e Baco interagem diretamente com os navegadores elevando os feitos humanos a uma escala divina Macedo procurou 'emendar' a obra de Camões sob um prisma neoclássico e racionalista realizando um 'processo higienizador'. Como padre e seguidor das luzes Macedo via os deuses pagãos como um erro estético e espiritual. Em O Oriente a mitologia é reduzida a meras alegorias ou figuras de erudição sem qualquer poder real sobre a ação histórica.</p>_x000d_<p>Raimundo Manuel da Silva Estrada foi um autor português do século XIX lembrado principalmente pelo seu papel na defesa da honra literária de Luís de Camões face aos ataques de José Agostinho de Macedo sendo esta a sua obra mais relevante.
