A quite scarce and early view book undated circa 1890 complete with 19 some with insert views some 2 per plate views in the Whites. Bds are quite good with minor edge wear a bit of light staining contents are clean and VG to near fine overall Very Good Condition. 6-1/4" x 9-1/2". Deep Red cloth-covered bds with red cloth spine blindstamped decorations and titles in Black & Gilt. Quite Attractive. One of a series by Charles Frey with very lerge images in his very bold and contrasty tinted style. NOTE: Although they are generally referred to as "photo-views" the pictures in these small popular albums were not photographs. They were printed with stone in a multi-pass process that displayed a range of tones not possible with ordinary lithographic printing. When covered with varnish the pictures looked as if they had been printed in an emulsion like a photograph. Printed predominantly in Leipzig Germany by Louis Glaser and distributed by Skillings & Howard Portland ME Chicholm Brothers Portland ME Adolph Witteman & Brothers of New York City. et al.

Chisholm Brothers (Sole Agents for Charles Frey's Original Souvenir Books of All American and Canadian Cities and Scenery. unknown
