Ce dernier, une fois libéré doit faire face à des polémiques et des attaques sur son commandement et la reddition de Sedan et sur la responsabilité de la défaite retombant sur lui. Cette polémique le conduira à provoquer en duel bon nombre de ses détracteurs. Il se défend, et publie, entre autres travaux : Sedan (1871), la France et la nécessité des réformes (1873) et l’Armée de la Nation (1875). Alexandre Félix de Wimpffen est décédé en 1884.
