C. Horsley 1 by Henry Warren 37 line engravings drawn from old master paintings by George Scharf jnr. under ther superintendence of Lewis Gruner final section of notes which has aberrant pagination with a simple parallel red and black line border elaborate publisher's binding of full rich morocco over very thick bevelled boards sides blocked with an elaborate border probably designed by Owen Jones and a central device composed of the interlaced letters I.H.S. smooth spine elaborately gilt decorated and lettered inner fold-ins and board edges gilt decorated all edges gilt neatly recased retaining the original pale blue glazed endpapers some trivial local foxing but a fine and most handsome copy. Preserved in a new marbled slipcase. <br /><br />R. McLean <i>Victorian Book Design</i> 1972 pp.88-90.<br />Owen Jones 1809-1874 architect and designer was interested in historical ornament as an inspiration for modern design and striving to determine universal principles of design studied both oriental and western arts. In this work Jones clearly echoed the hand-illuminated work of medieval breviaries psalters and books of hours. "The book was well printed by Vizetelly Brothers and must have been a considerable undertaking since it consisted of over 500 pages all printed in two or three colours" McLean. The complex wood-engraved borders were in widely varying styles and were printed in black blue and red combined or in such single colours as yellow green lilac blue red or brown. Additionally there were eight strikingly printed illuminated divisional 'title pages' chromolithographed in gold red blue and green. Additionally there are full-page woodcut plates by John C. Horsley and Henry Warren with engraved borders and a tint over the print. and 37 wood engravings after Raphael and others throughout the text. The result was "one of the most important examples of Owen's commercial decoration" McLean.The book was initially issued in eight parts and was later republished in 1850 and in 1863 in fewer colours and without the chromolithographed 'title pages'. The work is also "of great interest in tracing the work done by Baxter's apprentices" Lewis. Jones had his own press and with his co-worker H. N. Humphreys "developed several totally new binding styles using materials such as papier mâché terracotta and embossed leather which were more fitted to the sumptuous contents" O.D.N.B. It is likely that the binding of this copy was designed by Jones even if not created in his workshop.<br />C. T. No inscriptions a very good copy. Reprinted by Eyre & Spottiswoode circa 1903 with 630 pages. Welsh Bibliography of Miniature Books No.1854 702 pages and 1862 630 pages; Bondy Miniature Books pages 131 and 167; Griffiths Bibliography of Book of Common Prayer page 433 lists a 702 page copy dating it circa 1905. The sections omitted from the 630 page edition listed in the title are not quite the same as in the 702 page edition: "but without the calendar occasional services and articles of religion". Contemporary binding of full burgundy straight grain morocco with double gilt border to each cover tooled gilt bands to the spine with gilt titles in the second compartment and small gilt dots in the remaining compartments flower and leaf border decoration to the inner turn-ins. Condition good the binding has been repaired to at some point with the remains of an old worm track to the covers but not the pages new end-papers upper outer corner repaired corners hinges and spine ends rubbed gilt rubbed and dull on spine more so to the covers title worn at edges and dust marked pages slightly toned throughout with the odd couple of spots to occasional pages else contents complete and clean. Contemporary full dark goat skin leather blind tooled English full somber binding. Early marbled endpapers. A very good example of a sombre binding ca. 1667. The covers are blind tooled in a handsome frame and panel design that includes small acorns stars flowers and vines. The same elements appear on the spine compartments between five raised bands. The richness of the tooling on the binding is effectively disguised by this `black on black' work. Some scholars say that these were most popular in Puritan London where ostentation was frowned upon. But most of these sombre bindings appear after the restoration of King Charles II and reflect the royal court's encouragement of public and private displays of mourning for the beheading of his father King Charles I. Their use on liturgical books also accelerates after the Great Plague of 1665; and disastrous London Fire a year later. First title-page and Calendar printed in red and black two proof leaves loosely inserted see below. 20th-century crushed brown morocco spine divided by raised bands second and fourth compartments gilt-lettered direct edges gilt. Somewhat soiled and toned waterstaining to corners most prominently at beginning and end first title-page and that of the Psalmes trimmed at fore-edge and renewed at foot proof leaves fragmentary with significant loss from edges. Spine very slightly mellowed. ‘Alexander’ in an early hand to margin of D8 verso that name repeated to one of the proof sheets along with plentiful pen trials and scribbles and ownership inscriptions of James Allan dated 1799 and 1805 more modern bibliographical notes in pencil to pastedown along with a typed slip. The famous Prayer Book imposed on Scotland by Charles I resulting in riots in St Giles’s Edinburgh when first used in a service - the catalyst being a stool thrown at the dean while he read by an anonymous woman traditionally named as ‘Jenny Geddes’. The follow-on effects of this book included the National Covenant of 1638 the Bishops’ Wars Charles I’s downfall and the English Civil War and it ‘provided a model for the American BCP of 1789 and its successors; the prayer books of the Scottish Episcopal Church 1929 & the Province of South Africa 1954’ Griffiths. An impressive as well as an important piece of printing it was produced in considerable numbers thanks to an act mandating two copies in every parish in Scotland though this was only issued after printing had started leading to a frantic process of resetting and reprinting with attendant multiple variations cancels etc. The prose Psalter here is the ‘first edition’ described by Morgan in The Bibliotheck 5 p. 16 with the catchword ‘Certaine’ on kk6 and the Psalter title reading ‘According to the translation.’. Leaf hh3 was cancelled in both editions and a cancellans printed in two separate settings resulting in copies having one of four potential leaves two cancellans two cancellanda; in this case the cancellans with line 1 verso ending ‘he’ is present. Morgan also notes that the 1636 London printing of the Psalms is as here ‘frequently found bound with copies of this Prayer Book and is present in eighteen of the thirty-seven copies examined. Presumably Young the printer ordered a consignment to be sent from London to Edinburgh to be bound with the Prayer Book’ p. 19. This copy additionally preserves almost certainly from an earlier binding two proof sheets both printed on one side only and with textual variants to the pages in the full book. The proof sheets are of aa2 verso and aa7 recto and are different variants to those recorded by Morgan as present in the proof sheets preserved in copies in the NLS and Glasgow.
