With the engraved nineteenth century bookplate of Edmund Williams Gilbert mounted on front paste-down. The primary text is presented in a bold, large-fount type ideal for audience address. The 'Companion' is printed by Kaygill for Scatcherd & Letterman to match the edition of Prayer. The Psalter, by Brady and Tate, is also printed by Cooke & Collingwood and dated separately 1819. BCP extra-illustrated with 55 plates see below. Some of the plates are browned some spotting and erosion to fore-margins of L4-8 and Y1-8 in one case costing a few words some occasional thumbing some natural vertical creases to the spine 1723 gift inscription on binder's blank otherwise a good copy. An attractive octavo printing of the Prayer Book by Baskett here the less common variant of that year printed in black only but ruled in red. It has been extra illustrated with the suite of 55 engravings by Sturt after Veigne including the portrait and engraved extra title published by R.W. Whitledge and I. Hazard. These family Bibles also could contain as in this case the Book of Common Prayer and the "old" version metrical psalter with the expectation that they would serve the master of the house in leading family worship.<br>Â Â Â Â Provenance: "William Tillsons Bible" in manuscript above manuscript family records on the recto of the first blank; other family notes are recorded on its back and on the verso of the front free endpaper. Someone has taken the trouble to paste a large slip of paper onto the recto of the front free endpaper over a large ownership note that may read "Thomas Tilison His Bible Septr 4th 1784. <br>Â Â Â Â <br>Â Â Â Â Prayer Book: Griffiths Bibliography of the Book of Common Prayer 1786/2; ESTC N66721. Bible: Foxing and brown spotting with a few closed tears and occasional chipping in the margins the last resulting in loss of words from a few shouldernotes. The final text leaf is Ll2; there are interpolated signatures rz between Q and R.<br>Â Â Â Â Binding: Contemporary red morocco framed and panelled in gilt rolls with gilt-stamped corner fleurons board edges and turn-ins with gilt roll; later rebacked with red morocco spine beautifully stamped in foliate and geometric designs originally gilt but now virtually entirely black/blind. Bulmer 1802. 8vo 24 cm 9.5". vi 694 pp. <br><br>There were minor differences between the Prayer Books of the Church of England and the Church of Ireland up until 1801 the year that the churches merged; the various 1801 BCPs were the first to use the "United Church" designation. John Reeves had been appointed king's printer in 1800 and edited his own version of the BCP of which this is the second edition; the separate title-page following the preliminary matter is dated 1801. That preliminary matter offering historical and liturgical commentary is extensive and interesting.<br>Â Â Â Â Fore-edge: This beautiful example bears a subtly shaded => fore-edge painting showing Westminster Abbey in the background behind a waterfront view with sailboats.<br>Â Â Â Â Binding: Full straight-grain dark olive green morocco covers framed in elegant feather and pearl twist gilt roll turn-ins with floral gilt roll. Stone-pattern marbled endpapers. All edges gilt. <br>Â Â Â Â <br>Â Â Â Â Griffiths Bibliography of the Book of Common Prayer 1802/1.
