The very scarce first edition of this work.ESTC citation number T71415.Timothy Neve's lengthy criticism of Thomas Phillips' biography on Cardinal Reginald Pole.Phillips' biography on Pole is his major work his aim being to give an account of the Council of Trent from the point of view of a Roman Catholic.Neve's criticisms in this work were expressed in very strong terms from the point of view of the Church of England reflecting on the still fresh break from the Pope.In the third edition of Phillips' 'Life' he replied to Neve's criticisms.Bound without half-title.Two contemporary newspaper clippings tipped-in to the front paste down regarding Phillips and Pole. In a full calf binding. Externally generally smart with some rubbing and marks to the boards and spine. Minor bumping to the spine and extremities. Faint surface cracks to the spine. Loss to the top spine label and a small label to the head of the spine. Contemporary repair to the tail of the spine. Small cracks to the head of the joints. Front hinge is starting but firm. Two newspaper clippings tipped-in to the front paste down. Internally firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned and clean. Good Clarendon Press hardcover
