Hardcover. price-clipped moderate shelfwear slight exposure of boards at bottom corners light soiling to top of text block; jacket has a number of tiny tears and edge-nicks small ink stain near bottom corner of rear panel. The author "is writing about love today as it is under the Soviet. And here as in 'Three Pairs of Silk Stockings' the reader secures in addition to a love story perfectly told a clearer and more accurate insight into actual life in Soviet Russia than can be obtained in any other way." The New York Times gave the book a lengthy review calling it "a brilliant psychological novel which does not present a wholly Communist attitude to an eternal problem" -- quite probably the reason why also per the Times the author's books were "more generally and sympathetically read by the Western worn than by Russia." That never changed much and he was so out of favor by the time of his death in 1938 that the Writers' Union didn't even bother to publish an obituary; a 2007 study of Soviet-era satire reported that his books had long since been taken out of circulation and that he'd essentially been obliterated from the country's literary history. .
