197523932Vienna Austria: Not Published 1975. One page hand-written in ink on International Atomic Energy Agency Vienna letterhead; dated April 7 1975 to friends concerning their coming trip to Europe and where to visit: " We have visited Budapest and enjoyed it very much. Instead of Dubrovnik you might want to consider Bulgaria. Those who are in the know around here seem to feel Jugoslavia has gotten expensive with poor service to the tourist we can't really recommend Vienna in the summer. Another nice place you would like in Hungary is Tihany on Lake Balaton. Also in Budapest it is possible to stay in private homes rather than hotels. It is more interesting and much cheaper " and signed "Eli & Ailene"; approx. 8 ¼" x 11 ¾" size old fold lines a little edge-wear with the original canceled airmail envelope also with the Agency imprint; Eli I. Very Good Turkish Original wrappers. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In Turkish. 64 p., b/w ills. Two ex-library stamps on front and back covers. A rare Turkish brochure printed by "Folk Culture Center" in Germany for Turkey after the Chernobyl disaster in 1986. The Chernobyl accident was a catastrophic nuclear accident that occurred on 25-26 April 1986 in the No. 4 nuclear reactor of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, near the city of Pripyat, in northern Ukrainian SSR. [.] No evidence of changes in the prevalence of human deformities/birth congenital anomalies which might be associated with the accident, are apparent in Belarus or Ukraine, the two republics which had the highest exposure to fallout. In Sweden and Finland where no increase in abortion rates occurred, it was likewise determined that "no association between the temporal and spatial variations in radioactivity and variable incidence of congenital malformations [was found]." A similar null increase in the abortion rate and a healthy baseline situation of no increase in birth defects was determined by the assessment of the Hungarian Congenital Abnormality Registry, Findings also mirrored in Austria. Larger, "mainly western European" data sets approaching a million births in the EUROCAT database, divided into "exposed" and control groups were assessed in 1999. As no Chernobyl-based impacts were detected, the researchers conclude "in retrospect the widespread fear in the population about the possible effects of exposure on the unborn fetus was not justified". Despite studies from Germany and Turkey, the only robust evidence of negative pregnancy outcomes that transpired after the accident were these elective abortion indirect effects, in Greece, Denmark, Italy, etc., due to the anxieties created. This is an extremely rare brochure prepared for Turkey by the German government on Chernobyl including the effects of disaster and the measures for the same, accompanied by many b/w illustrations in a very interesting black humor style. 195876552Cape Canaveral: N.p. 1958-1973. This was the personal archive of missile installation foreman Joseph H. Lendle and the majority of it relates to Operation Hardtack I Project 9.31a. Project 9.3a was a series of U.S. nuclear tests conducted in 1958. Specifically Project 9.3a was responsible for the preparation and launch of two Redstone missiles carrying nuclear warheads for high-altitude detonations known as Shots Teak and Orange. These tests were part of Operation Newsreel a subset of Hardtack I focusing on high-altitude nuclear explosions and EMPs.The primary goal of Project 9.3a was to study the effects of nuclear detonations at high altitudes including their impact on communications electromagnetic pulse EMP generation and atmospheric phenomena. The Redstone missiles were modified to carry nuclear devices to altitudes of approximately 76.8 kilometers 47.7 miles. Each missile was also equipped with instrumented pods designed to collect data on pressures thermal and gamma radiation neutron flux and EMP effects. Both missiles were launched from the Johnston Atoll in the Pacific. Shot Teak was a failure and exploded directly over the Johnston Atoll but Shot Orange was an unqualified success. Despite Shot Teak's high-altitude detonation at 252000 feet the explosion was visible from Hawaii with observers reporting an aurora-like effect and a red shell that appeared to pass overhead. The EMP caused a temporary blackouts in Australia and Hawaii. The archive consists of includes 2 black and white snapshots of operations crew and the missile both 5 x 7†3 certificates honoring the participation of Joseph Frank Lendle 1921-2017 lead foreman of Operation Hardtack 2 typed letters signed to Lendle both signed by Kurt H. Debus Director Missile Firing Lab a birthday card from the Launch Operations Directorate a 2 pp. press release for The Florida Times-Union 3 printed memos 5 printed letters with facsimile signatures congratulating Operation Hardtack personnel for their excellent work including one from Dr. Werner van Braun. Sheets generally toned and with staple holes at upper left corners but generally quite nice. One "Certificate of Participation" has a two inch tear and three holes at the upper blank margin where pushpins once held to to a wall. Also included is a later plaque 1975 honoring Lendle’s contribution to the NASA rocket programs listing the launches that he participated in. He participated in 129 launches including those of Redstone Juniper "C' Jupiter Redstone-Mercury Juno Saturn Apollo and Skylab. Lendle worked in the space program for nearly 28 years after his military service in WWII. N.p. unknown

90932Xian China: Northwest Institute of Nuclear Technology NINT. Unknown edition or printing. Single sheet printed on one side. Very good. The format is approximately 8.5 inches by 11 inches. This is a hardcopy of a color vugraph. On the left side are to photographs. The top has a group of people walking in a tunnel and the lower on is an image of a tunnel. On the right side is a track overland of the tunnel's direction. The middle section is a hand drawn and captioned Tunnel Plan view including a Cross Section drawn at the lower right corner with some dimensions. The track goes from a brick face to the shot point. NINT was the institution responsible for conducting and analyzing China’s nuclear testing program. Since China signed the CTBT NINT has emerged with the primary responsibility for China’s field implementation of the technologies for the International Monitoring System IMS. An adit is a near-horizontal entrance or tunnel driven into a hillside or mountain for underground operations featuring only one opening to the surface. Adits offer a cost-effective safer alternative to vertical shafts. An adit allows workers to walk into a mine unlike vertical shafts to reach areas of interest directly. Because they are driven at a slight upward angle they allow water to drain out naturally removing the need for pumps. Adits also provide natural airflow for underground operations. Project 816 in Chongqing China is a massive decommissioned underground nuclear plant often cited as the world's largest artificial cave featuring over 20 kilometers of tunnels and 13 levels. Built in the 1960s to produce atomic bomb fuel it was designed to withstand nuclear hits with 18000 workers creating a facility that is now a tourist attraction. Key Details of Project 816:Structure: The complex contains 18 major caves over 130 tunnels and 80 roads.<br /> Design & Safety: It was built inside a mountain to resist a 1-megaton hydrogen bomb airburst and a magnitude-8 earthquake. Scale: The reactor hall is massive measuring 79.6 meters in height. Status: Construction was halted in 1984 85% complete due to shifting geopolitics. It was declassified in 2002 and opened as a tourist attraction in 2010. Northwest Institute of Nuclear Technology (NINT) unknown
