First edition of this trio of scarce and beautifully printed souvenir books issued by the Duke Sons & Co. tobacco company thanking their patrons for smoking Duke Cigarettes Cameo Cigarettes Turkish Cross-Cut Cigarettes and Cross Cut Cigarettes. The plates are composed of trading cards featuring the famed actresses and notable women across the world including Phoebe Russell Kate Blancke Mabel Jordan Estelle Clayton Zelie de Lussan for the American Canoe Association Royal Cork Yacht Club Seawanhaka Yacht Club Calshot Castle Yacht Club Oceanic Yacht Club New Brunswick Yacht Club and many others. The ball costumes feature stars dressed in a wide range of elaborate ball costumes with headdresses including those of parrots watermelon slices horns cricket ball & bat and even a woman with goldfish bowl and fish-themed jewelry. The third work featuring musical instruments was printed by a newly constituted Schumacher & Ettlinger Lithographers who had suffered a devastating fire just a few years before and includes a wide range of women musicians including a young African-American woman playing the banjo. Duke Sons & Co. headed by James Buchanan Duke was one of the founding members of the American Tobacco Company largely due to their ability to produce all cigarettes at a cheaper rate due to the invention of James Bonsack’s cigarette-rolling machine. The series of engravings illustrating the work include views of Montreal from the Canal the Haymarket the Mountain and St. Helen's Island as well as depictions of the various architectural landmarks of the city Church of Notre Dame Hôtel Dieu Chapel Nelson's Monument Theatre Royal Government House Bank of Montreal &c. They are engraved after drawings by James Duncan 1806-1881 "one of the first of Montreal's historic artists." Lande Spendlove refers to him as "one of Canada's first lithographic draughtsmen" and a "splendid watercolourist". Duncan emigrated to Canada in 1825 settling in Montreal where he became a skilful and successful professional artist lithographer and teacher of drawing. He was a founding member and treasurer of the Montreal Society of Artists and was elected a member of the Society of Canadian Artists at Montreal in 1867 and an associate of the Royal Canadian Academy in 1880. "These illustrations in which architectural detail is reproduced with great exactness are significant because they are among the few remaining original sources of Montreal architecture of the time." Stuck on endpapers. First American edition later printing. The first edition was published in 1687. The first English edition of Newton's "Principia" was translated by Andrew Motte a mathematician who with his brother Benjamin the publisher had edited the abridged "Philosophical transactions." This first English edition was published in 1729 from the third and definitive Latin edition of 1726. Newton's "A Treatise of the System of the World" was first published in English in 1728. The American edition bears a dedication and an introduction directed to teachers "If to educate means not so much to store the memory with symbols and facts as to bring forth the faculties of the soul and to develope them to the full by healthy nurture and a hardy discipline then what so effective to the accomplishment of that end as the study of Geometrical Synthesis . Let the Principia then be gladly welcomed into every Hall where a True Teacher presides." The discovery of one of the seven wonders of the ancient world First edition of this account of excavations at Mitylene Rhodes Kalymnos and various sites on the coast of Asia Minor. This includes the discovery of the ancient city of Halicarnassus and its famous mausoleum recounted in detail in the second volume. Following graduation from Oxford "Newton entered the British Museum in 1840 as assistant in the department of antiquities under Edward Hawkins. Here he took advantage of the opportunity to study a wide range of antiquities firsthand including coins and acquired a thorough training in curatorship. In 1852 Newton resigned from the British Museum on appointment as vice-consul at Mytilene. From April 1853 to January 1854 he served as acting consul at Rhodes. In addition to consular duties he was authorised to serve the interests of the museum by acquiring antiquities through excavation and purchase. His excavations on Kalymnos in 1854 and 1855 financed by Lord Stratford de Redcliffe the British ambassador at Constantinople yielded many inscriptions for the British Museum. Also in 1855 he unearthed the bronze serpent from Delphi in the hippodrome at Constantinople and visited Bodrum ancient Halicarnassus for the first time. After a second visit in the following spring he obtained a government grant of £2000 together with naval and military support for an expedition to retrieve some lions from the mausoleum immured in the castle of St Peter and to excavate the site of the mausoleum itself" ODNB. Newton became the first keeper of Greek and Roman Antiquities in 1861. He was closely involved in the foundation of three highly influential archaeological institutions: the Society for the Promotion of Hellenic Studies to which he gave an inaugural address in June 1879; the Egypt Exploration Fund founded in 1882; and the British School at Athens opened in November 1886.
