Young adamant that the Mutiny was the result of the government of India sanctioning 'idolatry' and 'popular superstition' references other contemporary military tragedies to demonstrate British resolve notably the recently concluded Crimean War: 'The cavalry charge at Balaclava was doubtless such a passage of arms as seldom falls to the historian to record; Inkermann was the modern Agincourt. Fredric Brown began selling short stories to American mystery magazines in the mid-1930s; despite the typically short form of his work Brown quickly became a popular name in the pulp scene. His first novel The Fabulous Clipjoint 1947 was an Edgar award recipient. His stories have been praised as the catalyst for modern mystery and science fiction tropes by the likes of Philip K. Dick Stephen King and Alfred Hitchcock. In 1984 Dennis McMillan Publications began to collect and republish Fredric Brown's short stories poems and miscellaneous fiction into a 19 volume series. This herbal presents images and English names for several thousand trees and plants organized in tables each containing about twenty images grouped by type. It was based on the work of earlier herbals made by James Newton 1639-1718 physician and botanist and was re-issued in 1752 through arrangement of his grandson James Newton Rector of Newnham the author of the dedication. Leather with gilt decoration to front and back cover plates gilt-stamped titling and decoration to spine blind-stamped decoration and four raised bands to spine. Leather boards age-worn with occasional faint cracking rubbing to edges skewed to fraying at fore-edge corners. Spine has been beautifully and unobtrusively repaired. The English astronomer and mathematician Edmund Halley 1656-1742 who supported publication of Newton's work cleverly referred to the late King James as being the dimwit unable to understand mathematics although obviously the audience for this paper was much larger. Added: the preceding drophead title and contents leaf pp. 441-442 of number 226 of the Philosophical Transactions in which Halley's paper was published.
