Pp. 1-118 a. 2 folded engraved plates. Cavendish's paper: pp. 1-62. the torsion balance of Michell shown on the plates.

First German edition of Cavendish's famous paper in which he calculated the weight of the earth and determined its mass. He also as the first observed gravitational motion of minute portions of matter. He estimates the earth's mass to 66 x 10 to the potential of 24 kg. The original paper "Experiments to determine the Density of the Earth" appeared in Philosophical Transaction 1798."Cavendish published five papers between 1784 and 1809.With one exception they were comparatively minor productions. The exception was his determination of the density of the earth or weighing of the world in 1798 by means of John Michell's torsion balance. The apparatus consisted of two lead balls on either end of a suspended beam; these movable balls were attracted by a pair of stationary lead balls. Cavendish calculated the the force of attraction between the balls fro the observed period of oscillation of the balance and deduced the density of the earth from the force. He found it to be 5.48 times that of water. Cavendish was the first to observe gravitational motions induced by comparatively minute portions of ordinary matter.By weighing the world he rendered the law of gravitation complete. The law was no longer a proportionally statement but a quantitatively exact one; this was the most importent addition to the science of gravitation since Newton."DSB III p. 158. unknown

1987173701987. Newton Helmut. Portraits 1987 presents a body of photographic work that defines late twentieth-century fashion and celebrity imagery through its treatment of power eroticism and visual identity. Newton's practice developed across editorial work for major publications and commercial photography situates portraiture within a broader cultural framework that links fashion sexuality and authority. The volume includes images of prominent cultural figures such as Andy Warhol Salvador Dalí Sophia Loren David Bowie Grace Jones Elizabeth Taylor and Mick Jagger establishing the book as a record of how celebrity and visual culture intersected in the 1980s. The work is dedicated to June Newton also known as Alice Springs whose role as photographer editor and collaborator shaped the presentation and circulation of Newton's images.

Newton Helmut. Portraits. New York: Pantheon Books 1987. First American edition. Signed by the author on the title page. Large-format volume containing photographic plates reproducing Newton's portrait work across fashion entertainment and political subjects.

Published during a period when fashion photography increasingly overlapped with fine art and mass media Portraits situates Newton within a network of image production that influenced both editorial aesthetics and public perceptions of celebrity. His visual language often described through terms such as "opulence" "fetishism" and "decadence" reflects broader cultural debates about representation gender and the commodification of the body in late twentieth-century media. The inclusion of figures spanning film music and art underscores the book's value for research into cross-disciplinary cultural production and the construction of public persona. Minor wear with two small closed tears along the top edge; otherwise clean and intact. Overall very good condition. unknown

183121773London: James Nisbet &T. Stevenson Cambridge 1831. 8vo 23.5 cm; 9". 1 f. xii 250 pp.

Third edition. In addition to being a physicist mathematician and natural philosopher Sir Isaac Newton was something of a Biblical scholar as well as shown by the present exegesis on apocalyptic texts. His analysis generally reads as being practical in nature as the New Catholic Encyclopedia X 428 says "Newton's writings on apocalyptical prophecies were not mystical or millenarian in any sense but more exercises in deciphering cryptograms." They comport with our sense of him as someone who believed in the scientific method!
"A new edition with the citations translated and notes by P. Borthwick . . . of Downing College Cambridge. Publisher's quarter green cloth with paper-covered boards. Rebacked in sympathetic cloth and new paper label antique style applied. Boards show age-stains and wear but are solid. Old library pressure-stamp on title-page. In an open back slipcase of green library cloth; spine of box with author title and call number in gilt. => A nice copy sound for reading. James Nisbet, &T. Stevenson, Cambridge hardcover books
2006000976No Location: Burcham F. Newton "Butch" 2006. First Edition . Soft cover. Fine. 22" x 14. Burcham F. Newton "Butch". Large original ink on heavy art paper "board" by Butch Burcham. Dejah is looking very fetching indeed in this detailed interpretation clad in.not a whole lot lounging and preening on a Martian boulder giant mushrooms in the foreground a Martian temple in the distance. Though intended of course as an erotically appealing Burcham Good Girl she has here been given something of a nice royal look by Burcham as well: rather a cross among Katherine Hepburn Serena Williams and Vampirella. Which is something one doesn't encounter every day. See scan. 22" x 14" unframed fine. Signed and dated in 2006 left of image. F. 1871240980Glasgow: James Maclehose 1871. Reprint. Hardcover. Good/No Jacket. 4to - over 9¾" - 12. N/a. xxxvi 538pp. The 1871 facsmilie reprint of the third edition of Sir Isaac Newton's great work in 4to. which appears to be a very faithful re-rendering but with no frontispiece. Not missing from this edition - it seems that they chose to exclude it. A good only copy because as a former bookseller has noted: 'pages carelously opened'. A number of unopened pages have been somewhat carelously forced leaving to some mostly small or very small chips to the margins no loss of text that I can see and some torn pages. Should you ask me to - I can repair some of these tears and make it even more presentable but given the importance of this title I am selling it 'as is' so that a buyer may choose some more professional attention. Original publisher's cloth boards with a paper title label to the head of the spine - as issued. Once again there is an issue here too as the front board is only holding by the upper 2 thread with the lower 2 binding cords present but not holding. On the plus side - no ink inscriptions the former bookseller's remarks in pencil and will erase and the pages themselves the vast bulk of them are undamaged clean with no marginalia and just some scattered spotting which is heavier to the front endpapers to include the new facsimile title page which incidentally has 2 such aforementioned chips at the head. The facsimile title page printed in red and black is in lovely condition. James Maclehose hardcover
