Envisaging a university education founded on "piety learning and good manners" First edition of this manifesto for university reform a testament to fierce inter-collegiate squabbles in early 18th-century Oxford. Richard Newton 1676-1753 spent the latter part of his career fighting to expand and reform Hart Hall in Oxford envisaging a collegiate structure which actively sought to mould its pupils - mentally and morally. As he made clear in the preface Newton's vision encompassed "piety learning and good manners" p. xvi. The plan ran into opposition from several other colleges which coveted Hart Hall's lands and pupils. Octavo 190 x 115 mm pp. xvi 207 1. Contemporary panelled calf edges sprinkled red. Although unmarked as such from the Sandys family library at Ombersley Court Worcestershire. Light bumping and rubbing a couple of spots of foxing but contents generally crisp: an excellent copy. Henry Stevens senior 1819-1886 was an American bibliographer who arrived in London in the mid 1840s and "set the book world ablaze virtually inventing Americana as a bookselling category helping to build some of the world's greatest libraries - finding material for John Carter Brown Library James Lenox Pierpont Morgan Henry Huntington William Folger" ABA. Hardcover red cloth boards three-quarter bound in red leather gilt text on spine. Interior shows some spotting as well as edge and corner bumps/wear. Internal binding is good and text pages are tight marbled end pages and pastedown and front and rear as well as all three exterior page edges. Signatures or bookplates present no library markings no handwriting. The rear end page and pastedown has some very minor damage near the lower outside corner where the two pages were stuck together. The very first bulletin number 30 has a tear near the upper outside corner which is also present on the second page in. Special bound edition for a gentleman farmer many the publications are original though some are reprints which are stated on the title pages. None of the bulletins are newer than 1909. Peleg Eddy challenges this and says "I never new sic of the fence being moved north where Newton built it" p. 25 In the case of John McCormick vs N. Green over assault: McCormick testifies "I was coming up the foot walk on east side. Green said I got a writ for you and so all right I went to his house and asked Mrs. Green if I insulted her . she said no I then said what do you thnk of that. He said you must go into the . I told him if he had got a legal writ.He caught me byt the neck & beat the breath out of me did not know what he did he jamed me against the wasl. I said in jail over night from 4 pm to 10 next day - had a sour throat." p.28 One trial was of a "pauper" woman - Rebecca Williams and her 5 children being evicted from their home and on whether the eviction was legal. From his LA Times obituary: "Frederik Ebbesen Grue a nationally recognized artist and former resident of Santa Paula has died of lymphoma. Grue died Nov. 22 at age 44. A native of Tarzana Grue lived and worked in Santa Paula from 1978 to 1983 when he moved to Indiana to fulfill his longtime dream of owning and restoring a Victorian mansion. Grue a self-taught still-life artist first exhibited his work in 1981 at the Carnegie Art Museum in Oxnard which has produced the only signed and numbered limited edition print by the artist. While living in Santa Paula Grue also participated in the 1992 Carnegie exhibit "The Art of Miniature" and became well known in the community for his painting workshops. His paintings which have sold for more than $50000 a piece have appeared at the National Academy of Design in New York the Hoosier Salon in Indianapolis and the Artists of America exhibit in Denver. Grue was known for his vision and interpretation of detail reminiscent of Flemish masters.
