Foxing to the fore-edge and the early/late pages of the book otherwise a VG copy with clean and bright boards. In the rare D/W which is priced 7/6 net to the spine as called for. The D/W is VG indeed with a tiny chip at the base of the spine not affecting any lettering. The spine is lightly browned a common fault with Gollancz yellow D/W's of this vintage. The head of the spine is lightly frayed and there is a short 1.4 cm closed tear and associated crease at the top left hand corner of the front cover. First book. Newton Gayle is a pseudonym of the writing team of Muna Lee and Maurice Guinness. Gayle was the surname of Lee's maternal grandmother. Death Follows a Formula deals with a man who discovers an alternative fuel to gasoline and his eventual murder. Shows well. Series Character: James Greer. Photographs/scans available upon request. See scans; too large for a single scan. 20" x 14" unframed fine. Signed and dated in 2007 at lower left corner. Preliminary sketch for the piece in pencil is on the back. F. Newton "Butch" Burcham has lengthy credits in comic book and computer game illustration. He is listed at ERBzine as a Burroughs illustrator for his contributions to the body of published Tarzan illustration and was interior artist for Pinnacle's vidgame titles "Monsters Muties and Misfits" 1999 and "Horrors of the Wasted West" 2002 as well as "Conan and the Queen of the Black Coast" 1989. Among his comic credits are "Godzilla King of the Monsters" Trendmasters 1994 and the Harlan Ellison comic book "Cameos" Dark Wolf #2 various issues of Roleplayer magazine and many others. "In 1893 Newton won the Lyell Medal. He was president of the Geologists' Association in 1896-1898 and president of the Palaeontographical Society from 1921 to 1928. Newton was elected Fellow of the Geological Society in 1873 Zoological Society of London in 1885 and Fellow of the Royal Society in 1893" Wikipedia. This is Monograph IV of the Survey's Memoirs - the last one published. Wrappers chipped and frayed at edges; the front wrapper partly taped and a tear in the gutter of the title leaf.
