Plats à motifs sombres, gardes marbrées. Belle indication gravée en doré "J.-B. Garnier", l'un des plus grands libraires franco-brésiliens de l'époque, au premier contreplat. Avant-propos et table des matières en tête de volume. Médecin, anthropologue et criminologue, Étienne-Émile Adolphe Dortel (1858-1909) s'oppose ici ouvertement au grand criminologue de l'époque Cesare Lombroso en affirmant que "le criminel-né n'existe pas". Le livre est un essai polémique pointant le caractère non conclusif des études anthropométriques de Lombroso sur des criminels. Si Dortel admet quelques concessions, par exemple que "la hauteur de la face est plus importante chez les criminels", il s'intéresse beaucoup plus aux facteurs psychologiques du crime et aux motivations des déviants : "Ce qui domine peut-être dans le criminel c'est la vanité, une vanité absurde, démesurée. Ils tirent vanité de tout, de leur courage, de leur beauté, de leur vigueur, de leurs amours, de leurs richesses, de leurs exploits, de leurs condamnations. La conséquence de ce sentiment c'est d'abord une inclination à la vengeance pour les causes les plus futiles ; ensuite une cruauté que rien n'apaise. Quand ils ont une fois goûté cet horrible plaisir de faire couler le sang, tuer devient un besoin impérieux." (p. 46)

First American edition. First published in London 1851.<br /><br />William Henry Brett was born in Dover and following the death of his father he was raised by his grandfather. At the age of thirteen or fourteen Brett became a Sunday school teacher. He was recommended to the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel by Reverend Thomas Medland the curate of his church. In 1840 he left England for British Guiana. Brett was ordained a deacon in 1843 by Bishop William Austin. After suffering from malaria he was forced to return to England in 1849 but returned late the following year. In total Brett spent almost forty years as a missionary to the native peoples of South America retiring in 1879. He translated the New Testament and the Book of Common Prayer into several of their languages. William Henry Brett married Caroline Nowers in 1845. Brett died Oct. 2 1886 Paignton at the age of 67. In 1880 Brett published Legends and Myths of the Aboriginal Indians of British Guianaand in 1881 Mission work among the Indian tribes in the forests of Guiana. In 1851 he had publishedIndian missions in Guiana.<br /><br /><strong>Condition: </strong>Spine sunned corners bumped spine ends and corners moderately rubbed gilt dulled.
