L'auteur, représentant de la Confédération argentine au Congrès international des sciences géographiques de 1875, tente dans cet ouvrage de répondre à la question des causes de l'émigration et de la fondation de colonies ainsi qu'à celle des systèmes de colonisation les plus avantageux. "L'histoire du monde est traversée par un vaste mouvement de migration humaine, presque ininterrompu depuis les âges les plus reculés jusqu'à nos temps modernes où, loin de se ralentir, il semble avoir pris une intensité nouvelle à l'aide des conquêtes de l'intelligence que l'homme a faite sur les éléments qui l'entourent... les événements, les circonstances se modifient, mais la nature de l'homme ne change pas. Cependant, nous assistons à des courants graduels d'émigration isolée, individuelle ou en groupes, et non plus à des irruptions soudaines et compactes. De plus, l'émigration paraît devenue en quelque sorte un fait permanent, n'a pas toujours pour objet la colonisation proprement dite, mais plus souvent la seule recherche d'un travail ou d'un trafic plus facile et lucratif." A square tight copy with perfectly sound inner hinges. The book is bound in the original pebble-grain reddish-brown cloth. Gilt stamping on the spine is still bright. The front cover has a shallow groove or indentation not too obtrusive -- 1/8th inch wide 4.5 inches long cloth is not punctured. There is some light scattered foxing on the endpapers and on the edges of the text block. However all text pages are clean crisp and unmarked with NO foxing. No underlining. No highlighting. No margin notes. NO owner's name or bookplate. This is the first appearance in print of David Zeisberger's dictionary of the Onondaga Iroquois and Delaware Algonquin languages. Previously it existed only as a manuscript in the Harvard College Library. The editor discovered it there and arranged publication. This is one of the copies as described by James Constantine Pilling which is "printed on larger and better paper." Pilling notes that the title page of these Large Paper copies omits two lines beginning "This edition has been published." just before the imprint.
