A9780309101653Paperback / softback. New.
Scholars—and adults in general—have pondered for centuries the mysterious processes that influence the ways in which children gradually become adults. The development of professional organizations and journals devoted to adolescence as well as increasing appreciation in academia and the world of policy for the importance of this phase of life have helped this field catch up with the pace of research on other stages of human development particularly infancy and early childhood.

The development of a comprehensive review of research on adolescence depends in large part on the perceived need for such a synthesis and the extent to which different research fields as well as policy and practice would benefit from such an effort. To address these issues the National Research Council and the Institute of Medicine through the Board on Children Youth and Families held a two-day workshop in September 2005. The workshop was designed as an opportunity for an interdisciplinary group to explore the different strands of research that contribute to understanding adolescence. In the brief time available the group was not asked to address the entire range of issues related to adolescent health and development but rather to provide an initial explanation of issues that a longer term study might address.

A Study of Interactions summarizes the major themes discussed at the workshop. It begins with an overview of what adolescence is and current views of the processes that shape development in the second decade of life. It explores the transdisciplinary research issues already presented in this field as well as issues raised in discussions of goals for the field's future. A closing section describes the presenters' thoughts on the feasibility of launching an in depth contextual study that could more firmly establish connections among the many fields of study concerned with adolescence.

paperback

Spine and boards a bit darkened covers with a hint of soiling occasional light foxing a few closed tears not affecting text other trivial defects but AN EXTREMELY FINE COPY the insubstantial binding with nothing approaching a significant defect and the text remarkably bright clean and fresh.

Still in its original boards and in lovely condition this extensive treatise on the causes and treatment of hernias was written by an English surgeon known as a radical precursor of Darwinian attitudes towards the nature and development of man. One of our author's earliest publications when it was first issued in 1807 as "A Treatise on Hernia" the present work won a prize at the Royal College of Surgeons. According to Heirs of Hippocrates William Lawrence 1783-1867 "contributed significantly to the understanding and management of ruptures" and his "Treatise" "remained for many years the standard work on the subject." Lawrence crossed swords with both the Church of England and the medical establishment with several lectures and publications that espoused his materialist views applauded France and the United States for their commitment to free scientific thought and even dared to question Old Testament narratives regarding the origins of man. DNB tells us that "Throughout the nineteenth century . . . he was often regarded as a martyr for the cause of science and of intellectual liberty. His lectures were even cited as precursors for such later works of scientific naturalism as Charles Darwin's 'Descent of Man' 1871 and Thomas Huxley's 'Man's Place in Nature' 1863." Various editions of the present work can be found on the market but it would be difficult to find one in better contemporary condition than ours.
Printed for Callow and Wilson

Revised Edition.

16mo 6 3/8 x 4 1/2 inches; 162 x 113 mm 32 pages in stapled wrappers soft cover.

Pamphlet from a company offering "medicated" suppositories and contraptions that purportedly treat men's sexual nervous and urinary disorders.

One "treatment" involves cocoa butter. "The suppository now glides into the rectum with the most perfect ease by means of a little pressure from the finger and which is often important this method of rectal treatment leaves no traces to excite the curiosity of servants or others." page 10.

While most of the "treatments" involve suppositories of one kind or another the company also offers devices to relieve men's suffering illustrations helpfully included. There's "Dr. Curling's Varicocele Truss" which supposedly treats pain in the scrotum. This we're told is preferable to surgery. "Several surgeons have been assassinated by patients whom they have thus made hoplessly sic impotent." page 23.

There's also Marston's Urethral Tapers pencil-like devices that "soothe heal and at the same time destroy all germ life. They medicate the entire canal never stain the clothing and are rapid in action." So convenient you can carry them in your pocket. page 27.

Marston Remedy Company was a defendant in a number of court cases. "Marston Remedy Company was owned by H.D. Van Leuven of New York. The company's advertising methods proved so outrageously fraudulent -- even for the period -- that in September 1906 the Postmaster-General denied the company the use of the U.S. mails."
