Second edition revised with engraved illustrations added to this informative memoir of an American doctor following his awarding of Harvard M.D. for a thesis on “Syphilis.†From 1844-1845 he traveled through Paris studying Medicine discussing the dissection and anatomy lectures the differences between American and French medical practices during the July Monarchy of Louis-Philippe I along with examinations of the different penal systems hospitals and institutions for the Deaf and Dumb Insane Asylums and more. Originally published as serial observations with the Newark Daily Advertiser they were compiled into the author’s original 1848 “Old Wine in New Bottles†this edition was enhanced with steel engravings. Gardner 1821-1876 graduated Harvard in 1844 with his M.D. finished his A.M. by 1852 after returning from France worked as attending physician to the New York City Dispensary then the Lying-In Asylum District and later a Private Hospital in Bloomingdale. He specialized in obstetrics and sexually transmitted diseases was the first to propose clean water public drinking fountains in New york and also was the first to employ chloroform as an anesthetic during childbirth. Evident FIRST EDITION of the first issue of this series of household medical almanacs. We've been unable to locate an earlier Scovill almanac. Consists of receipts testimonials and advertisements for patent and proprietary medicines sold by A.L. Scovill & Co. Publisher's notice page 1 states "This 'Family receipt book' is to be published annually. Its object is to explain in a familiar manner what every mother may do for her children or her family in cases of emergency or in ordinary complaints where it would be inconvenient or impossible to obtain the services of a doctor . By the issuance of this version F.A. Davis Co. emphasizes the advantages to using Physiognomy in order to “win success in the business world†and how they can use adherents can use these systems to change habits develop character and aid in health disease and longevity. Mary Stanton 1837-1914 was a specialist in Phrenology who had developed her practice originally while tutoring and serving as a nannie to newspaper publisher Horace Greeley’s children after her second husband Jesse Hanks died leaving her and her four children destitute when his family seized the assets.
