Early ink ownership signature to title page John Wheeler. A complete but worn copy. Covers are somewhat rubbed and worn with some flaking of paper at spine and portions of printed spine label rubbed away; text conspicuously foxed throughout; half-title lacking; front endpaper partially excised one plate partially detached at gutter. Text is uncut and despite the prominent foxing to text the plate leaves are mostly unblemished. Complete and Good. <br /> <br /> An infrequently encountered American surgical text. Anderson who trained at the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh emigrated to America in 1820 and after delivering a series of anatomical lectures in New York under the patronage of Valentine Mott the current work was published to supplement these lectures became affiliated with the Vermont Academy of Medicine see Kelly American Medical Biographies. NY: 1920. This work is notable for the nine anatomical plates all engraved by A.B. Asher Brown Durand including four engraved from his original illustrations. These are quite early works by Durand who would achieve his first prominence as the engraver of John Trumbull's edition of the Declaration of Independence 1823 and later great renown as a landscape painter of the Hudson River School from about 1840 on. Not cited in any of the standard medical bibliographies and infrequent in commerce with only a single copy traced at auction in the past 50 years Swann 1979. James V. Seaman unknown

Bound in publisher's red cloth with gilt spine titles in plain printed jackets. Near fine books in very good jackets with some wear and light staining. <br /> <br /> First edition of Budge's important translation of the great Syriac "Book of Medicines" edited from a manuscript that was in his possession and an English translation of the same. The work is uncredited but was translated from Greek into Syriac by a physician who was likely a Nestorian and perhaps attached to one of the great medical schools at Edessa Amid or Nisibis. The first section is a series of lectures which give detailed descriptions of human anatomy prescriptions for and descriptions of various diseases and is fundamentally similar to Hippocrates who is quoted in several places in the text. <br /> <br /> The second section is astrological and includes omens spells divinations and planetary forecasts. The final section contains 400 prescriptions that illustrate folklore of Mesopotamia including legends about birds animals magical roots etc. similar to a medieval Bestiary. <br /> <br /> <br /> A very nice set and quite scarce in the jackets. . However the same system also places significant strain on land water air and other natural resources. A better understanding of the food-environment synergies and trade-offs associated with the U.S. food system would help to reduce this strain. Many experts would like to use that knowledge to develop dietary recommendations on the basis of environmental as well as nutritional considerations. But identifying and quantifying those synergies and trade-offs let alone acting on them is a challenge in and of itself. The difficulty stems in part from the reality that experts in the fields of nutrition agricultural science and natural resource use often do not regularly collaborate with each other with the exception of some international efforts. Sustainable Diets is the summary of a workshop convened by The Institute of Medicine's Food Forum and Roundtable on Environmental Health Sciences Research and Medicine in May 2013 to engender dialogue between experts in nutrition and experts in agriculture and natural resource sustainability and to explore current and emerging knowledge on the food and nutrition policy implications of the increasing environmental constraints on the food system. Experts explored the relationship between human health and the environment including the identification and quantification of the synergies and trade-offs of their impact. This report explores the role of the food price environment and how environmental sustainability can be incorporated into dietary guidance and considers research priorities policy implications and drivers of consumer behaviors that will enable sustainable food choices. paperback

Type: Book The 1990s have seen an increasing number of supposedly active drugs for the treatment of chronic liver diseases e.g. ursodeoxycholate for treatment of cholestatic conditions and alpha-interferon for the treatment of chronic viral hepatitis. However in all controlled studies hard end-points such as survival or need for transplantation often cannot be obtained owing to the prolonged course of chronic liver diseases up to the time of hepatic decompensation and death. Therefore surrogate markers for the different conditions are sorely needed in order to assess the value of these novel treatment modalities. This collection of symposium papers defines surrogate markers and evaluates those frequently used in randomized clinical trials.
