195716652JCulver City: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer February 28 1957. Original 129 page mimeographed shooting script entitled Captain Dreyfus written by Gore Vidal. Bradbound in printed studio wrappers. Very good. Enclosed in a custom morocco leather and cloth clamshell box. Directed by and starring José Ferrer as Captain Alfred Dreyfus Anton Walbrook Viveca Lindfors Leo Genn Emlyn Williams David Farrar Donald Wolfit Herbert Lom Harry Andrews Felix Aylmer George Coulouris Peter Illing Michael Hordern. In 1894 Alfred Dreyfus José Ferrer a Jewish captain in the French Army is falsely accused of treason. He is sentenced to life imprisonment on Devil's Island. Major Ferdinand Walsin-Esterhazy an infantry officer of Hungarian descent helps in the investigation. When he is found to be the real spy the French Army tries to hide the truth by exonerating the traitor in a mock trial. Émile Zola the famous French author writes an open letter to the prime minister of France entitled I Accuse! which reveals the truth behind the cover up. The letter is published in the newspaper causing a firestorm around the world leading to a re-examination of the entire Dreyfus case. Eventually Esterhazy makes a full confession and Dreyfus is completely exonerated being inducted into the French Legion of Honor. Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer hardcover
194825087New York: E.P. Dutton 1948. First edition of this landmark novel. Octavo original black cloth. Signed by the author on the title page. Fine in a bright near fine dust jacket with two small chips to the crown but does not show the fading endemic to the spine panel. A very sharp example. Stylistically influenced by Hemingway this work "is distinguished by its honesty and lack of self-pity; the central figure is unexceptional in every respect but his sexual choices" Stringer 690. "One of the best novels of its kind. . . . It isnt sentimental and it is frank without trying to be sensational and shocking" Christopher Isherwood. E.P. Dutton hardcover
1948509163Dutton 1948. First Edition. Hardcover with Dust Jacket. NEAR FINE/NEAR FINE. First Printing. SIGNED on title and subsequently INSCRIBED by Gore Vidal on FFEP to his personal friends Stathis Orphanos and Ralph Sylvester: 'For Stathis and Ralph.' Stathis was a noted photographer and shot Vidal on multiple occasions including the portrait used on the cover of his memoir. Stathis and Ralph also operated the Los Angeles fine-press publishing firm 'Sylvester and Orphanos' which published Vidal's Sex is Politics. 314pp. Black buckram gilt spine lettering blindstamp to front cover. Some trivial toning to pages and endpapers otherwise very clean and sharp; Dust jacket has some light rubbing to extremities and a very small chip to head of spine. Vidal's third novel The City and the Pillar is recognized as the first post-war novel to portray an openly gay protagonist whose homosexuality is treated as natural and appropriate. The novel met with some scandal: in his autobiography Vidal notes that the New York Times refused an advertisement for the book and that for a period of six years following no major newspaper or periodical would review his work. He quotes an editor at Dutton as saying 'You will never be forgiven for this book. Twenty years from now you will still be attacked for it.' Vidal also notes private enthusiasm expressed by his LA friends and fellow Gay writers Christopher Isherwood Thomas Mann and Steven Spender. While Spender averred that the novel was essentially autobiographical Vidal denied it. Dutton hardcover

Compiled between 1170 and 1180 while Maimonides was living in Egypt the Mishneh Torah is regarded as the author's magnum opus. It is the only Medieval-era work that surveys the full panoply of Jewish observance including those laws that are only applicable when the Jerusalem Temple is in existence. The present edition is the first to contain Judah Rosanes' commentary Mishneh le-melekh. "Mishneh Torah" The Repetition of the Law is an appellation originally applied to the biblical book of Deuteronomy; the subtitle "ha-Yad ha-Hazakah" The Book of the Strong Hand plays on its subdivision into fourteen books: the numerical value fourteen is represented in Hebrew letters as Yud 10 Dalet 4 which forms the word "yad" hand. Maimonides sought to provide a complete statement of the Oral Law so that a person who mastered first the Written Torah and then the Mishneh Torah would be in no need of any other book. Contemporary reaction was mixed with strong and immediate opposition focusing on the absence of sources and the belief that the work appeared to be intended to supersede study of the Talmud itself. Maimonides responded to these criticisms and the Mishneh Torah endures as an influential work in Jewish religious thought. According to several authorities a decision may not be rendered in opposition to a view of Maimonides even where he apparently militated against the sense of a Talmudic passage for in such cases the presumption was that the words of the Talmud were incorrectly interpreted. Likewise: One must follow Maimonides even when the latter opposed his teachers since he surely knew their views and if he decided against them he must have disapproved their interpretation.

Vol. 1: 1 title 8 234 102 3 ff. A highly controversial figure both during his lifetime and after his death he is generally acknowledged as the preeminent Jewish thinker of the Middle Ages. He was born in Córdoba Spain but fled as a child from the Almohad persecution. He eventually settled in Egypt where he served as a rabbi physician and philosopher. His fourteen-volume Mishneh Torah his only work not in Arabic still carries canonical authority particularly within the Yemenite Jewish community as the codification of Talmudic law. His other works include "Kitab al-Siraj" a commentary on the Mishnah "Kitab al-Fara'I" a book on precepts and the celebrated philosophical work "Dalalat al-Ha'irin" known in Hebrew as the "Moreh Nevukhim" The Guide to the Perplexed. In this latter work Maimonides attempted a philosophical/theological reconciliation of the Hebrew Bible and Greek knowledge. This work came to play a central role in all subsequent major controversies over philosophy within the Jewish community during the Middle Ages. Bi-defus Yisrael bar Avraham hardcover
